Common Ant Species Found in Bathrooms
Argentine Ants
Small (1/16-1/8 inch), light to dark brown, and known for forming long trailing lines. Argentine ants build massive supercolonies with multiple queens, making them difficult to eliminate with contact sprays alone. They are the most common bathroom ant in the southern and western US.
Carpenter Ants
Large (1/4-1/2 inch), black or dark brown, and alarming to find because they excavate wood to build nests. Carpenter ants in a bathroom often indicate moisture-damaged wood in the wall, subfloor, or window frame. They do not eat wood (unlike termites) but hollow it out for nesting. A single carpenter ant sighting warrants investigation for water damage.
Odorous House Ants
Tiny (1/16-1/8 inch), dark brown to black, and named for the rotten coconut smell they produce when crushed. These are among the most common indoor ants in the US. They trail along baseboards, countertop edges, and plumbing lines. Colonies contain multiple queens, so killing visible ants barely dents the population.
Pharaoh Ants
Very small (1/16 inch), yellowish to light brown, and nearly translucent. Pharaoh ants are a serious indoor pest because they nest inside heated buildings year-round and their colonies bud (split into new colonies) when stressed by repellent sprays. Using the wrong treatment can actually make a pharaoh ant problem worse by scattering the colony into multiple locations.
How to Get Rid of Ants in Your Bathroom
Step 1: Find the Entry Point
Follow the ant trail backward to discover where they enter the bathroom. Common entry points include gaps around pipes under the sink, cracks in grout or caulk along the tub, spaces around the toilet base, and gaps where the baseboard meets the floor. Watch the trail for at least 5 minutes to identify the precise entry and exit points.
Step 2: Use Bait, Not Spray
This is the most important step, and where most people go wrong. Spray insecticides kill the ants you see but never reach the colony, which contains the queen and thousands of workers inside your walls. Ant bait works differently. Worker ants carry the bait back to the nest, feed it to the queen and larvae, and the entire colony dies within 1-2 weeks.
For sugar-feeding species (Argentine, odorous house, pharaoh ants), use liquid bait stations like Terro T300. Place them directly on the ant trail near the entry point. You will initially see more ants as they swarm the bait, which is a sign the treatment is working. For carpenter ants, use gel bait (Advion Ant Gel) applied into cracks near the nest area, since carpenter ants prefer protein-based baits over sugar.
Step 3: Seal Entry Points
After the colony dies down (typically 7-14 days), seal the entry points to prevent recolonization. Use silicone caulk for gaps around plumbing fixtures, along the tub perimeter, and where tile meets the wall. Fill larger gaps around pipes with steel wool packed tightly, then caulk over it. Replace deteriorated grout in the shower and around the floor.
Step 4: Eliminate Moisture Sources
Fix dripping faucets and running toilets. Repair any leaking supply lines or drain connections under the sink. Improve ventilation by running the exhaust fan during and for 20 minutes after every shower. Wipe down wet surfaces after bathing. A bathroom that dries quickly between uses is far less attractive to moisture-seeking ant species.
Natural and DIY Remedies
- White vinegar spray: A 50/50 vinegar-water solution erases the pheromone trails ants use for navigation. Spray along the trail path and entry points after cleaning. This does not kill ants but disrupts their routes and deters new foraging
- Diatomaceous earth (food grade): Dust lightly along baseboards, behind the toilet, and under the vanity. The microscopic sharp particles damage the ant’s exoskeleton, causing dehydration. Effective but slow-acting and must stay dry to work
- Borax and sugar bait: Mix 1/2 cup sugar, 1.5 tablespoons borax, and 1.5 cups warm water. Soak cotton balls in the solution and place near ant trails. This is essentially a homemade version of commercial liquid bait and works on the same principle
- Peppermint oil: A few drops of peppermint essential oil mixed with water and sprayed along entry points repels ants temporarily. Reapply every few days. This is a deterrent, not a colony killer
When to Call a Professional
Carpenter ants in a bathroom always warrant professional inspection because their presence signals moisture-damaged wood that may need structural repair. If you find winged ants (swarmers) emerging from bathroom walls or floor, that indicates a mature colony nesting inside the structure, which a pest professional should address.
Persistent infestations that survive 2-3 weeks of proper baiting also need professional attention. A licensed exterminator can identify the species, locate hidden nesting sites using moisture meters and borescope cameras, and apply professional-grade treatments. Expect to pay $150-$300 for a standard ant treatment or $300-$600 if carpenter ant damage inspection and treatment are required.
Preventing Ants From Coming Back
Long-term prevention comes down to moisture control and exclusion. Keep your bathroom dry, ventilated, and sealed. Run the exhaust fan. Fix leaks promptly. Re-caulk tubs, showers, and sinks annually.
