Ants do not crawl out of a clean drain — they crawl toward food residue, standing water, and pheromone trails left by scout ants who already mapped your kitchen. Finding ants in sink drains, on counters near the sink, or trailing along the backsplash points to a small set of attractants that almost always include grease film inside the drain, sugary residue on counters, or a leak under the cabinet that creates a moisture source. Killing the visible ants accomplishes nothing without solving the underlying invitation. The colony sends new scouts within 48 hours.
Why the Sink Specifically
Three things bring ants to a sink. Water — kitchens with even minor leaks under the cabinet create a constant moisture source that ants can locate from 30 feet away through micro-cracks in walls and flooring. Sugar — coffee splashes, fruit residue, soda spills, and even the sugar coating on cereal create a feast film along counter edges. Grease — the inside of the drain pipe accumulates a thick organic film that ants harvest like livestock.
Address all three at once or the problem returns. Treating only the visible ants without removing the food and water sources is the most common mistake homeowners make.
Identify the Ant Species First
Different ants respond to different baits. Sugar ants — including odorous house ants and ghost ants — are the most common kitchen invaders and want sweet baits. Pavement ants come up through floor joints and prefer protein and sugar mix. Carpenter ants are larger black ants that signal a wood moisture problem inside walls and need professional pest control.
Squash one ant and smell it. Odorous house ants give off a distinct rotten-coconut smell. Pavement ants are odorless. Carpenter ants are 1/4 to 1/2 inch long with a single node between thorax and abdomen — much larger than typical sugar ants.
Clean the Drain First
Pour 1 cup of baking soda directly into the drain followed by 1 cup of white vinegar. The mixture foams and breaks down grease film coating the inside of the drain pipe. Let it sit 15 minutes, then flush with a full kettle of boiling water — about 1.5 liters — to wash the residue down the line.
Repeat weekly for the first month after an ant problem. Removing the food source inside the drain eliminates one of the strongest attractants. Skip chemical drain cleaners — they damage seals and do not address ant attraction the way grease removal does.
Wipe Down All Counter Surfaces With Vinegar
Ants follow pheromone trails that other ants laid down before them. White vinegar disrupts these trails. Mix a 50/50 vinegar and water solution in a spray bottle and wipe down every horizontal counter surface, the backsplash up to 12 inches above the counter, and the sink basin itself.
Pay special attention to the seam where the counter meets the wall. Ant trails concentrate in this corner and the residue can be invisible to the eye. Reapply daily for the first week after seeing ants, then weekly as maintenance.
Bait, Do Not Spray
Spraying ants kills the visible ones and accomplishes nothing for the colony. Bait stations let foraging ants carry slow-acting poison back to the colony where it kills the queen and breeders. Terro Liquid Ant Baits — the brand-name borax-based bait — are the standout product for indoor sugar ants. Cost is $4 for a 6-pack of bait stations.
Place bait stations along the trail you observed. Two or three stations near the sink usually suffice. Resist the urge to clean up dead ants for 7 to 14 days — ants need to keep finding the bait and trafficking it back to the colony for the treatment to work fully.
Find and Fix the Leak Source
Pull everything out of the cabinet under the sink and inspect every fitting and pipe joint. Look for water staining on the cabinet floor, a musty smell, or visibly damp wood. Check the supply line connections, the trap, the drain tailpiece, and the disposal mounting flange.
Tighten loose slip nuts hand-tight plus a quarter turn. Replace cracked plastic traps with new ones — a basic kitchen P-trap kit runs about $15 and installs in 20 minutes. Loose disposal mountings need the snap ring repositioned and the gasket replaced. Eliminating the moisture source removes the strongest reason ants are entering at this location.
Seal Entry Points
Ants find tiny gaps. Inspect the wall behind the sink, around the supply lines, around the drain stub, and around the dishwasher line for any gap larger than 1/16 inch. Seal small gaps with silicone caulk. Larger gaps around plumbing penetrations need expanding foam — Great Stuff Pestblock has a bittering agent that ants and rodents avoid.
Also check exterior entry points. Ants travel through the wall from outside to reach the sink. Caulk around hose bibs, foundation cracks, and the rim joist where the framing meets the sill plate. Spray a 12-inch perimeter band of bifenthrin or permethrin insecticide along the foundation outside the kitchen if the trail leads outdoors.
Long-Term Prevention
Establish a few habits to prevent ants from returning. Run hot water down the drain for 30 seconds after every dishwashing session to keep grease film from rebuilding. Wipe counters every night with the vinegar solution. Take trash out daily during ant season — May through September in most climates.
If ants in sink problems return more than once a year despite consistent maintenance, schedule a pest control treatment. Quarterly perimeter spraying around the foundation runs $40 to $80 per visit and prevents the population from building near the house. The investment pays off compared to the time and frustration of repeated DIY treatments inside.
