Base Preparation: Where Walls Live or Die
The single most important part of any Belgard wall is invisible once finished. Excavate a trench deep enough to bury the entire first course plus six inches of compacted base below it. Fill that trench with crushed gravel, road base or 3/4-inch minus, in lifts of a few inches, compacting each lift with a plate compactor until it is rock solid and dead level.
Set the first course on that base and check every block for level in both directions. This bottom row is your reference for the entire wall, so spending extra time here pays off in every course above.
