Why Blown Insulation

Move the hose steadily, filling the joist cavities and then building up over the tops of the joists to your marked depth. Keep the layer even; do not leave hills and valleys. Blow to the settled target for cellulose by adding extra height, since it will compress over time. Wear a respirator, goggles, gloves, and long sleeves, and step only on the joists or on boards laid across them, never on the drywall ceiling between joists.

Attics are hazardous work areas. Ventilate and avoid the hottest part of a summer day, since attic temperatures can be dangerous. Use good lighting, watch your footing on joists, and take breaks. Wear an N95 or better respirator, because both cellulose dust and fiberglass fibers irritate lungs, eyes, and skin. Keep the blower operator and hose runner in communication so material feeds smoothly without clogs.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Skipping air sealing: Blowing over leaky penetrations wastes much of the benefit. Seal first.
  • Blocking soffit vents: Covering eave vents traps moisture and risks mold and rot. Install baffles.
  • Burying non-IC recessed lights: A fire risk. Barrier them off.
  • Under-blowing to save bags: Falling short of target depth quietly costs comfort and energy every year.

That is why keeping soffit and ridge vents clear is critical; burying soffit vents under blown insulation traps humid air that condenses on the underside of the roof deck, leading to mold and rot. Install baffles at every rafter bay to preserve the airflow channel from the soffits up to the ridge. Also make sure bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans vent all the way outside, not into the attic, since dumping moist air into a well-insulated attic is a recipe for condensation problems.
