A tub seal that cracks and molds within a year isn’t bad luck — it’s bad process. Why Tub Caulk Fails (And Why Yours Cracked)
The tub-to-tile joint is the hardest-working sealant joint in your house. An acrylic or steel tub drops measurably when it’s holding 40 gallons of water plus a person — sometimes a sixteenth of an inch or more, especially on framed installations. The caulk has to stretch through that cycle every single day, while soaked in soap film and cleaned with harsh chemicals. Cheap acrylic caulk has nowhere near the elasticity for this and cracks within months. And any new bead applied over soap scum or old silicone residue never bonds in the first place — it just lies there until water sneaks behind it and mold blooms underneath. Buy the Right Caulk
For the tub-to-tile and tub-to-surround joints, use 100 percent silicone labeled kitchen and bath, with a mildewcide. It stays flexible for a decade, is fully waterproof, and shrugs off cleaners. Expect $7 to $12 a tube. My notes from the field:
- 100% silicone (kitchen & bath): The standard. White, clear, biscuit, and almond cover most tubs. One 10-ounce tube handles a full tub perimeter twice over; the small squeeze tubes work but give you less control.

Step 1: Remove Every Trace of the Old Caulk
This is half the job and it cannot be shortcut. New silicone will not bond to old silicone residue — even a film you can’t see.
- Slice along both edges of the old bead with a utility knife or a dedicated caulk-removal tool, then peel the bead out in strips. A plastic razor scraper cleans stubborn sections without scratching the tub.

Step 2: Fill the Tub With Water First
Here’s the trick that separates lasting seals from annual redos: before you caulk, fill the tub at least half full — full is better — and leave the water in until the caulk cures. The weight pulls the tub down to its lowest position, opening the joint to its maximum width. You caulk the joint at its widest, so when you drain the tub and it rises, the cured bead compresses slightly rather than stretching. Caulk resists compression far better than tension. Skip this step and the first full bath after your re-caulk stretches the brand-new bead to its limit on day one. This matters most on acrylic and fiberglass tubs and second-floor installations; a cast iron tub on a slab barely moves, but the water fill costs nothing, so I do it every time.
Step 3: Tape for a Straight Bead (Optional but Worth It)
If you want a crisp professional line, run painter’s tape along the tile about 1/8 to 3/16 inch above the joint, and along the tub the same distance below it. The gap between tapes is your bead width. Press the tape edges down firmly. This adds ten minutes and removes all anxiety from the tooling step. One rule: the tape must come off while the silicone is still wet, so don’t tape more than you’ll caulk in the next few minutes.
Step 4: Cut the Tip, Run the Bead
- Cut the nozzle at 45 degrees, sized so the opening is slightly smaller than the joint — for a typical 1/4-inch tub gap, about a 3/16-inch opening. Small is recoverable; a gaping cut is not.
- Puncture the inner seal, load the gun, and prime the flow on a piece of cardboard.
- Run the bead in one continuous motion per side, moving at a steady pace with even trigger pressure. I push the gun (nozzle angled into the direction of travel) because it forces caulk into the joint rather than laying it on top; pulling is fine if it’s what your hands know.
- Fill the joint fully — you want caulk contacting both the tub and the tile inside the gap, not a hollow bridge over it. For gaps wider than 3/8 inch, stuff foam backer rod into the joint first so the caulk forms the proper hourglass profile instead of a deep, crack-prone slug.
Step 5: Tool It Smooth, Pull the Tape

Keep the drained-tub rule in mind: the water you filled for step 2 stays in the tub until the silicone reaches at least its light-moisture cure, then drain gently. No showers for 24 hours minimum. Ventilate the bathroom during cure — silicone cures by reacting with humidity in the air, and airflow speeds it while clearing the vinegar smell of acetoxy-cure products.
The Corners and the Floor Joint
Vertical corners where surround walls meet get the same treatment as the horizontal joint, worked from bottom to top. The tub-to-floor joint deserves attention too: seal it, because splash water that slips under the tub apron rots subfloor invisibly. If your bathroom trim gets painted, this floor joint is the one spot where a paintable hybrid earns its place over pure silicone.
Final field notes. Buy two tubes even though one will do — running dry mid-bead forces an ugly cold joint. Do the whole job in one session so every joint cures on the same clock. Check your work six months in: press the bead lightly and look for any edge lift, because a thirty-second razor-and-redo on one small section beats discovering a rotted stud wall two years later. A tub caulked on clean, dry surfaces, with real silicone, over a water-loaded tub, tooled once and left alone to cure, is a five-to-ten-year seal — and the whole job costs less than a large pizza.
