Understanding Traffic Ratings and Durability
Commercial products carry ratings you should read before buying. For resilient floors, look for an ASTM or manufacturer traffic classification; many LVT and sheet products are rated “heavy commercial.” Carpet tiles publish a traffic appearance rating, often on a 1-to-5 scale, where 4.0 and above suits corridors and entries.
Wear layer thickness is the most honest durability number for LVT. A 12-mil layer fits light commercial offices, 20-mil handles general commercial, and 28-mil or thicker belongs in airports, big-box retail, and other punishing environments. Do not confuse total plank thickness with wear layer thickness; only the wear layer protects the printed design from foot traffic.
