Roughly one in four new decks in the US now goes down in composite instead of wood, and the boards driving that shift have changed more in 15 years than lumber has in a century. Modern composite decking boards are not the fading, mushroom-sprouting gray planks of the early 2000s — capping technology fixed that generation’s failures — but the category now spans $2-per-foot builder boards to $8-per-foot mineral composites, and the construction differences matter more than the brand names. This guide breaks down how composite boards are built: capped versus uncapped, hollow versus solid, wood-plastic versus PVC, and how the major brand tiers compare.
What’s Inside a Composite Board
Classic wood-plastic composite (WPC) blends roughly 50-60 percent wood flour (fine sawdust) with 35-45 percent polyethylene or polypropylene — much of it recycled grocery bags and milk jugs — plus pigments, UV inhibitors, and bonding agents, extruded into board profiles. The wood content gives stiffness and a natural feel; the plastic seals the wood from rot and insects. Boards come in standard deck dimensions: nominally 1 inch thick (actual 0.92-0.94 inch typically) by 5.5 inches wide, in 12-, 16-, and 20-foot lengths.
Two variants sit beside WPC on the shelf. PVC boards (Azek/TimberTech Advanced PVC, Wolf Serenity) contain no wood at all — fully synthetic, lightest in weight, most stain- and moisture-proof, priciest. Mineral-based composites (Deckorators Voyage with its mineral-filled core) replace wood flour with mineral fill for near-zero thermal expansion and Class A fire ratings in some lines. Both cost more than WPC and solve specific problems: PVC for docks and pool surrounds, mineral cores for hot climates and ground-contact approvals.
Capped vs Uncapped: The Dividing Line That Matters Most
First-generation composite was uncapped — the wood-plastic blend ran bare to the surface, where sun bleached it and moisture fed mold in the exposed wood particles. The class-action lawsuits of that era taught the industry its biggest lesson. Since around 2010, quality boards are capped: a co-extruded polymer shell 0.030-0.075 inch thick bonded over the core, carrying the color, grain texture, and all the stain/fade warranty language.
Buy capped, full stop, for any exposed deck. The remaining choice is cap coverage: boards capped on three sides leave the bottom face open (cheaper, fine over ventilated framing), while four-sided capping seals everything (better near water and for picture-frame borders where board bottoms show). Uncapped composite survives today only in bargain bins and a few solid through-color products — acceptable for a hidden utility platform, a false economy anywhere the sun hits. Warranties tell the story: uncapped boards carry 10-25 year structural coverage, while capped lines add 25-50 year fade-and-stain warranties on the shell.
Hollow vs Solid Profiles
Cut a composite board and you find either a solid core or a honeycomb of hollow chambers. Solid boards dominate the US market: heavier (a 16-foot board weighs 50-60 pounds), stiffer between joists, quieter underfoot, and cuttable anywhere without exposing voids. Hollow or “scalloped” profiles save 20-30 percent on weight and a dollar or more per board — Trex Enhance’s scalloped bottom is the highest-profile example — at the cost of a slightly hollower sound, required end caps or picture-framing to hide open profiles, and less tolerance of joist spans beyond spec.
Neither is wrong. Scalloped boards on 16-inch-centered joists perform fine for typical residential decks; go solid for stairs, docks, commercial traffic, and anywhere you plan diagonal installs (which shorten effective span support). Whatever the profile, composite is not structural — every brand requires conventional pressure-treated or steel framing beneath, typically at 16 inches on center for straight runs and 12 inches for diagonals.
Brand Tiers and What They Cost
Material prices per linear foot of 5.5-inch board sort the market into three tiers:
- Entry ($2.20-$3.50/ft): Trex Enhance, TimberTech Prime, Fiberon Good Life, Deckorators Trailhead. Three-side caps, scalloped profiles common, limited color palettes with single-tone finishes.
- Mid ($3.50-$5.50/ft): Trex Transcend, TimberTech Prime+/Reserve, Fiberon Sanctuary, Deckorators Vista. Solid cores, multi-tonal streaked finishes, deeper embossing, 30-50 year fade/stain warranties.

Performance Realities Across All Brands
Composite’s honest weaknesses are shared category-wide, so weigh them before brand shopping. Heat: dark composite boards in full summer sun reach 140-160°F — hotter than wood — and PVC runs somewhat cooler; pick light colors for pool decks and barefoot households. Expansion: boards move lengthwise with temperature (WPC roughly 1/16-1/8 inch per 16-foot board across a 100°F swing, mineral cores far less), so end-gapping per the install manual is not optional. Flex: all composites are bendier than wood, which is why joist spacing specs are tighter. And while capped boards resist stains and mold dramatically better than the old generation, “low maintenance” still means a soap-and-water wash once or twice a year — just never sanding, staining, or sealing again.
Fastening: Hidden Clips vs Face Screws
Board construction determines how you fasten, and the choice shows forever. Grooved-edge boards accept hidden clip systems (Trex Hideaway, TimberTech CONCEALoc, Fiberon Phantom; $3-$5 per square foot in clips) that leave a completely clean surface and automatically set the required 1/4-inch side gaps. Square-edge boards take color-matched composite face screws (Cortex and TOPLoc systems hide the heads with plugs) — cheaper and stronger against uplift, which is why stairs, perimeters, and the first and last boards get face-fastened even on clip jobs.
Whichever system you use, drive nothing without reading the brand’s fastener chart: standard deck screws mushroom composite around the head, and clips from one brand voiding another brand’s warranty is a genuine fine-print trap. Pre-drilling ends within 2 inches of a cut stops the splitting that hollow profiles especially invite. Cutting itself is friendly: a standard circular saw with a 40-tooth carbide blade handles composite cleanly, though PVC boards prefer a finer 60-tooth blade to avoid melting the cut edge on slow passes.
How to Choose
Start with the environment, not the color samples. Full-sun southern exposure or a pool surround points to light colors and premium PVC or mineral boards; a shaded backyard deck on a budget does beautifully in entry-tier capped WPC. Match the profile to the framing you have or plan — scalloped saves real money on a 16-inch-OC rectangle, solid earns its weight on stairs and borders. Then compare warranty documents, not marketing pages: the fade threshold (measured in Delta E units, 5 or less is the good standard) and labor coverage in years separate confident manufacturers from hopeful ones. Composite decking boards are a 25-year purchase; an extra dollar per foot spread over that horizon costs less than one season of staining the wood deck you almost built instead.
Order samples before ordering pallets — every major brand mails them free or nearly so — and stress-test them at home rather than admiring them. Leave samples in full sun on a hot afternoon and touch-test at 4 p.m.; drag a key across the cap; hold them wet next to your house’s siding and trim, since composite colors read differently against brick than against white vinyl. Twenty minutes of sample abuse tells you more than any brochure, and it is the last free decision in a project where every subsequent change costs a restocking fee. When two boards tie on looks and price, break the tie on distribution: the brand your local yards stock deep is the one you can match five years from now when a falling branch takes out three deck boards and the repair needs to disappear.
