Stand in the concrete aisle at any home center and you’ll face a wall of nearly identical bags — yellow, red, blue — that behave completely differently once water hits them. Grab the wrong concrete mix and your fence post sets before it’s plumb, your countertop is full of gravel, or your new walk scales off the first winter. Every bag on that shelf is a specific tool: a blend of Portland cement, sand, and (usually) gravel proportioned for a particular job, strength, and working time. Learn to read the four numbers that matter — PSI, set time, aggregate size, and yield — and the wall of bags sorts itself into about six products, each with a clear purpose.

What’s Actually in the Bag

Standard concrete mix is roughly one part Portland cement, two to three parts sand, and three to four parts gravel up to about 3/4 inch. The cement and water react chemically — they cure, not dry — and the aggregate is the skeleton that gives the cured material its bulk and dimensional stability. That’s the key distinction between product families: concrete mix contains gravel and is for anything 2 inches thick or more; sand mix (sand and cement only) handles thin work under 2 inches; and mortar mix (cement, lime, fine sand) is sticky and made for bonding brick and block, never for slabs. Pouring a 1-inch topping with gravel-filled concrete mix, or setting a post in mortar, are the two most common aisle mistakes, and both fail.

The Core Products and When to Use Them

The Yield Math Nobody Does Until They’re Short

An 80-pound bag yields 0.6 cubic feet of concrete. A 60-pound bag gives 0.45, a 50-pound bag 0.375. There are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard, so a yard of concrete is 45 80-pound bags — a number that should recalibrate your project planning instantly. A 10-by-10 pad at 4 inches thick is 33.3 cubic feet, or 56 80-pound bags: about $350 in material and two and a half tons of lifting and mixing. That’s the practical ceiling of bagged concrete. Past roughly a cubic yard, ready-mix delivery ($150 to $200 per yard plus delivery fees) is cheaper on your back and better for the slab, because one truckload cures as a single consistent batch instead of 56 slightly different ones. Water: The Ratio That Makes or Breaks Strength

More water makes concrete easier to work and dramatically weaker — it’s the least intuitive fact in the material. Each extra gallon per bag inflates the void space left behind as the water evaporates, and a soupy mix can lose a third or more of its rated strength, then shrink and crack besides. Follow the bag: an 80-pound bag wants about 3 quarts of water, added incrementally. The target is a peanut-butter consistency where a trowel-cut groove holds its shape without slumping shut or standing dry and crumbly. Mix in a wheelbarrow with a hoe, or rent a drum mixer ($50 to $70 a day) for anything over 10 bags — it’s faster and produces a more uniform batch than arm power at bag 15. In hot weather use cold water and work fast; below 50°F use warm water, and don’t pour standard mix at all below 40°F without cold-weather measures.

Reading the Job: Matching Mix to Application

Some quick pairings from the field. Sidewalk or patio slab: standard 4,000 PSI, or crack-resistant if you’re skipping wire mesh. Driveway or anything holding vehicles: 5,000 PSI high-early. Fence posts and mailboxes: fast-setting, no mixing. Repairing a spalled surface 1/2 to 2 inches deep: sand/topping mix with an acrylic fortifier, never graveled mix. Setting a railing into cored holes: non-shrink grout, because regular concrete shrinks back from the steel. Cast countertop: countertop mix, wet-cured slowly for strength and minimal cracking. Structural footings per plans: whatever PSI the plans call out — inspectors can and do ask for the bag rating. When a project sits between products, buy the stronger or faster one; the $2-per-bag difference is invisible next to redoing the work.

Additives Worth Knowing About

A handful of bottle-and-box additives extend what bagged mix can do. Acrylic fortifier ($10 to $15 a quart) replaces part of the mix water to boost bond and flexibility — essential when you’re patching against old concrete with sand mix, useful in thin toppings generally. Liquid cement color ($8 per bottle, one per two 80-pound bags) tints a batch integrally; charcoal and buff hide stains far better than plain gray on a garage-shop pour. Accelerators like calcium chloride speed set time in cold weather but slightly weaken the final product and corrode embedded steel, so use them thoughtfully. Concrete bonding adhesive, painted on old surfaces before a fresh pour, works only while tacky — read the window on the label, because bonding agent that skins over dry becomes a bond breaker, the exact opposite of its job. And plain old Portland cement plus bagged sand and gravel is still the cheapest route for big volumes if you’re willing to proportion your own 1:2:3 mix — old-school, and how every generation before the yellow bag did it.

Mixing and Curing Habits That Show Up in the Result

Empty the full bag when you mix — cement and aggregate stratify inside, so half-bags come out unpredictable. Dry-blend any bag partially before adding water if it’s been stored a while. And respect curing: concrete reaches its rated strength only if it stays moist while it hydrates. Mist the surface and cover with plastic, or apply a curing compound, for the first 3 to 7 days; a slab that flash-dries in July sun can leave a third of its strength unrealized and its surface soft enough to dust. Strength milestones run roughly 24 hours to walk on, 7 days for 70 percent strength and light vehicles, 28 days for the full rating. Store spare bags off the floor and sealed — a bag that’s gone hard in the corner of the garage has already cured, and no amount of hammering brings it back. Pick the right bag, measure the water, cure it like it matters, and bagged concrete will perform exactly as printed. One last habit separates tidy work from callbacks: rinse tools and wheelbarrows immediately into a designated corner of the yard, never a drain — cured concrete is forever, and that applies to the inside of your mixing tub just as much as your new slab.
