Cutting Mirror Glass: A Complete Guide for Homeowners

Most DIYers assume mirror glass is too fragile or too dangerous to cut without a professional shop, but the technique is identical to cutting plain window glass. The only differences are the silvered backing on one side and the slightly higher cost of the raw stock. Cutting mirror glass at home is well within reach for anyone willing to buy a $12 carbide wheel cutter, work on a padded flat surface, and follow the score-and-snap sequence the trade has used for 200 years. Done right, you get a clean straight edge in under three minutes per cut and save the $40 to $80 per piece a glass shop would charge.

What You Need Before You Start

Tool selection matters more than skill at this stage. A cheap plastic-handle cutter with a dry wheel produces ragged scores and broken edges. Spend $12 to $25 on a proper carbide oil-fed cutter and the work gets dramatically easier.

Cutting on bare wood or concrete causes the glass to flex and crack mid-score.

Measure, Mark, and Set Up

Mirror glass scores best at 65 to 75°F. Cold glass cracks unpredictably and warm glass deforms slightly under the cutter wheel. Bring your work into a room at room temperature for at least 30 minutes before starting.

Lay the mirror silvered-side down on your padded surface. You always score the front face, not the silvered back, because the silvering chips when stressed and ruins the visible edge. Mark the cut line on the front with a fine-tip wet-erase marker, then position your straightedge 1/16 inch away from the line to account for the offset of the cutter wheel.

The Score

Dip the cutter wheel in cutting oil, position it at the far edge of the glass, and pull the cutter toward you in one continuous motion. Apply firm but moderate pressure, roughly the weight of a coffee mug. The sound should be a single steady hiss, not a chattering scratch. Never score the same line twice. Going over a score weakens the glass and almost guarantees a bad break.

The visible mark is a thin white line, not a deep groove. Mirror glass typically measures 1/8 inch or 3/16 inch thick. The score only needs to penetrate the top 1/200 of that thickness to define the break line.

The Snap

Position the scored line directly over the edge of your work surface or over a wooden dowel 1/4 inch in diameter. Press down evenly on both sides of the score with your palms. The glass separates cleanly along the line with a soft crack.

For pieces wider than 12 inches, the dowel method is essential. Lay the glass score-side up across two parallel dowels positioned 1/2 inch on either side of the line, then press down on both edges simultaneously. For narrow strips less than 1 inch wide, use breaking pliers like the Inland Glass Grozer ($24) to grip and snap the strip without the leverage going wrong.

Cutting Curves and Circles

Straight cuts are the easy version. Curves require a circle cutter like the Fletcher Bullseye ($45) or the Toyo Beam Compass ($85), which scores a continuous radius from a center pivot. After scoring the circle, use a glass cutter or the back of the cutter handle to tap a series of relief scores from the circle outward to the edge of the panel. Each relief score lets a small wedge of glass break away, slowly releasing the circle.

This work takes patience. A 6-inch circle cut from a 12-inch square typically needs 12 to 16 relief scores and about 20 minutes of careful tapping. Curves tighter than a 3-inch radius are at the edge of what is practical with hand tools. Below that, you need a wet tile saw with a diamond blade.

Smoothing the Edge

A freshly scored mirror edge is razor sharp and will cut you in seconds. Always finish the edge before handling the cut piece.

The fastest method is a diamond hand pad, 200 grit, used wet. Run the pad along the edge with light pressure for about 30 seconds per linear foot. The edge dulls and the slight white frost makes the edge nearly invisible against most wall colors. For a more polished result, follow with a 400 grit and then a 600 grit pad. The full sequence takes about 90 seconds per linear foot.

For a true polished pencil edge, you need a wet belt sander with a 400 grit cork-bonded belt, which costs $300 and up. At that price point, most homeowners send the piece to a glass shop for $5 to $15 per linear foot.

Drilling Holes

If your mirror needs mounting holes for clips or standoff hardware, use a diamond hole saw bit sized to match. Bosch and Rockler both sell 1/4-inch and 1/2-inch diamond core bits for $15 to $30 each. Run the drill at 600 to 800 rpm with a constant stream of water on the bit. Light pressure, never force.

Keep the hole at least 1 inch from any edge. Closer than that, the localized stress from the bit causes the glass to spider-crack outward toward the edge during the cut.

When to Skip DIY

Three cases justify paying a glass shop. Tempered mirror glass cannot be cut. The tempering process locks internal stresses, and any score causes the entire sheet to shatter into pebbles. Antique mercury-backed mirrors are fragile and the silvering chips at any disturbance. Large pieces over 24 by 36 inches are difficult to handle alone and one slip costs more than the cut would have.
