DIY Air Purifier: Clean Room Air for a Fraction of Retail

Wildfire haze and winter dust push a lot of people toward $300 air cleaners, but you can match the performance for under $80 at home. A well-built DIY air purifier pairs a common box fan with high-efficiency furnace filters and moves as much clean air as machines costing four times more. The now-famous Corsi-Rosenthal box, the design most people mean when they say DIY air purifier, was engineered by air-quality experts and independently tested, so this is not a gimmick. Here is how to build one that works and how to size it to your room.

How a DIY Air Purifier Actually Works

The principle is simple: force room air through a filter fine enough to trap particles, then repeat until the air is clean. A box fan supplies the airflow, and MERV-13 furnace filters do the capturing. MERV-13 traps roughly 85 percent of particles in the 1-to-3-micron range, the size of most smoke, pollen, and respiratory aerosols.

The clever part is surface area. A single flat filter chokes a fan’s airflow, but arranging four or five filters into a cube gives the air far more area to pass through, dropping resistance and letting the fan move much more air.   3. Set the box fan face-down on top of the cube, blowing upward and out. Tape the fan to the filter tops all the way around.
  4. Cut a cardboard shroud, an 8-to-10-inch circle removed from a square that covers the fan, and tape it over the fan face to focus airflow.
  5. Check every seam by feel with the fan running; seal any spot where you feel air leaking sideways.

Sizing It to Your Room

Performance is measured in CADR, clean air delivery rate, in cubic feet per minute. A five-filter Corsi-Rosenthal box delivers roughly 450 to 700 CFM of filtered air, comparable to a $400 commercial unit. To clean a room well you want four to five air changes per hour.

Run the math: a 12-by-15-foot room with an 8-foot ceiling holds 1,440 cubic feet. Five air changes an hour means moving 7,200 cubic feet hourly, or 120 CFM. Maintenance and Filter Life

Filters load up with what they capture, and a clogged filter starves the fan. In normal indoor air, 1-inch MERV-13 filters last three to six months; during heavy wildfire smoke, they can gray out in a few weeks. Inspect them monthly by pulling one and looking at the intake side.

Replace all filters at once so airflow stays balanced. Thicker 4-inch pleated filters hold far more dust and stretch to nine or twelve months, which offsets their higher price. Run the fan on low or medium overnight; the box design moves so much air that even the low setting clears a bedroom several times an hour while staying quiet enough to sleep through. Save the high setting for active smoke events when you want maximum throughput and do not mind the hum.

Placement changes the result more than people expect. Set the unit off the floor on a chair or small table so it pulls from the breathing zone rather than floor-level dust, and keep it a foot or two from walls and furniture so the filter faces are not blocked. Center it in the room if you can, or near the doorway where household air circulates. In a home with forced-air heat, running the HVAC fan alongside the box helps mix the air so the purifier reaches every corner faster.

It is fair to ask whether the homemade box really competes with a commercial unit, and the honest answer is that on airflow it wins.
