Building a DIY crib for your baby is one of the most rewarding woodworking projects you can take on, but it is also one of the most heavily regulated. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has strict standards that commercial cribs must meet, and while those rules technically apply to manufacturers, every safety requirement exists because babies have died from designs that ignored them. Before you cut a single board, you need to understand exactly which dimensions, materials, and joinery choices are non-negotiable.
The Safety Rules You Cannot Skip
Crib safety standards are codified in 16 CFR Part 1219. Even though these regulations target commercial manufacturers, every one of them exists because of injury or death investigations. Apply them to your homemade build without exception.
- Slat spacing must be no more than 2-3/8 inches apart — narrower than a soda can to prevent head entrapment
- Interior dimensions must be 28 inches by 52-3/8 inches, plus or minus 5/8 inch — this matches standard crib mattress sizes
- Mattress support to top rail height must be at least 26 inches in the highest position
- No drop-side mechanisms — these have been banned since 2011 due to entrapment deaths
- No cutouts in headboards or footboards where a baby’s head can become trapped
- All hardware must be securely embedded with no exposed screws, sharp edges, or pinch points
- All finishes must be non-toxic and lead-free
If you cannot commit to every one of these rules, buy a commercial crib instead. There is no acceptable compromise on infant sleep safety.
Choosing Lumber for a Crib
Hardwood is mandatory. Softwoods like pine and fir dent under normal use and can split along grain lines, creating splinter hazards. Stick with kiln-dried hardwoods that have been verified at 6 to 8 percent moisture content.
Top choices include hard maple, white oak, cherry, and birch. Hard maple is the workhorse — dense at 705 kg/m³, takes finish beautifully, and costs $7 to $9 per board foot at most hardwood suppliers. White oak adds visual character with prominent grain and runs $8 to $10 per board foot. Cherry darkens beautifully over time and costs $9 to $12 per board foot. Avoid walnut for the rails — it is soft enough that teething babies can leave indentations.
Skip all pressure-treated lumber, MDF, plywood with formaldehyde-based adhesives, and any reclaimed wood with unknown finish history. Old paint from pre-1978 sources may contain lead. Buy fresh lumber from a hardwood dealer rather than trying to repurpose furniture.
Joinery That Holds Up
Mortise-and-tenon joints with hide glue or Titebond III wood glue create the strongest connections for crib construction. Each rail-to-post junction should use a 1-inch deep mortise minimum, with tenons sized to occupy roughly one-third of the post thickness.
For the corner posts, 2-inch by 2-inch hard maple turnings or square stock work well. Slats can be 5/8-inch diameter dowels or 5/8-inch by 1-1/2 inch flat stock with rounded edges. Round dowel slats are easier on fabric and gentler on small fingers — use a round-over bit with at least 1/8-inch radius on every edge that can touch the baby.
Skip pocket screws, brad nails, and anything that relies on metal fasteners alone. Hardware that comes loose over years of shaking and chewing is exactly the failure mode that causes injuries. Glue and mechanical joinery are required.
Finish Choices That Are Actually Baby-Safe
“Non-toxic” gets used loosely in the woodworking world. For a crib, you need finishes that are certified food-safe or specifically marketed as baby-safe — meaning they have passed ASTM F963 toy safety standards for migration of lead, cadmium, and other heavy metals.
Three options dominate:
- Pure tung oil from a single-ingredient source like Real Milk Paint Co. — penetrates the wood, cures fully in 30 days, and is naturally food-safe. Apply 3 thin coats, sanding lightly between each with 320-grit.
- ECOS Paints clear varnish — water-based, zero-VOC, and tested to EN-71 toy safety standards. Apply 3 coats by foam brush, sanding lightly between coats.
- General Finishes Enduro Pro water-based polyurethane — meets ASTM D4236 and is widely used for commercial baby furniture. Cure time is 30 days before any baby contact.
Skip any finish that is not specifically rated for child contact. That includes Minwax stain, standard polyurethane, lacquer, and shellac unless purchased from a certified food-safe supplier. Even after curing, undisclosed solvents can off-gas into a closed nursery.
The Mattress and Foundation
Buy the mattress before you build. Standard crib mattresses are 27-1/4 inches by 51-5/8 inches, but variations exist. Measure the actual mattress you plan to use and build interior dimensions to fit it with no more than 1/2 inch of total gap on any side.
Mattress support is typically a plywood platform or a series of slats. If you use slats, they should be 3 inches wide minimum and spaced no more than 3 inches apart. The support must be adjustable — most cribs offer two or three height positions so you can lower the mattress as the baby grows from infant to toddler.
Hardware Selection
Use only galvanized or stainless steel hardware. Every screw must be countersunk and either plugged or covered. Through-bolts at the four corners should be threaded brass or stainless inserts with hex bolts, not lag screws that loosen with movement.
Test every fastener with a torque wrench after assembly. Recheck the hardware monthly during the first year of use — wood expands and contracts seasonally and fasteners can loosen over time.
Skill Level and Tools Required
This is not a beginner project. You need to be comfortable cutting accurate mortises, turning or shaping dowels, planing rough lumber flat and square, and applying a multi-coat finish without runs or bubbles. Minimum tool kit includes a table saw, drill press with mortising attachment or a dedicated mortiser, a thickness planer, a router with round-over bits, and clamps long enough to span 56 inches.
Plan for 40 to 60 hours of shop time spread over four to six weeks. The finish alone requires 30 days of curing before the crib is safe for an infant to occupy.
Cost Comparison Versus Buying
A DIY crib in hard maple with proper joinery and a certified finish runs $250 to $400 in materials. Comparable commercial cribs from brands like Pottery Barn Kids or Pali range from $600 to $1,200. The savings are real but the time investment is substantial, and the result is only worth the effort if you genuinely enjoy fine woodworking and have the skill to meet safety standards.
When to Skip the DIY Route
Be honest with yourself. If you cannot consistently cut mortise-and-tenon joints to within 1/64 inch tolerance, if you have never applied a finish from scratch, or if you do not own the tools listed above, buy a commercial crib. Cribs are one of the few items where the manufactured version is genuinely better than a beginner DIY because of mandatory testing standards that home builders cannot replicate. There is no shame in choosing safety over a Pinterest-worthy project.
