What Actually Matters in a Seed Starting Tray
Five factors determine whether a tray produces strong seedlings or stunted, leggy ones. Drainage tops the list — water that sits in the bottom of a cell rots roots and breeds damping-off fungus. The cell needs to be at least 1.5 inches deep for most seedlings to develop a healthy root ball before transplant. Material has to hold up to 2-4 weeks of moisture without molding or collapsing. Cells need to release the root ball cleanly when transplant day arrives. And the whole tray has to fit under a grow light or in a sunny window without dripping.
Every DIY method below hits at least four of those five marks, and the best methods hit all five for free.
Method 1: Newspaper Pots
Newspaper pots are the classic zero-cost option. Wrap a sheet of newspaper around a small glass or jar (a Mason jar lid works well), fold the bottom, and slide off. Fill with seed-starting mix and you’re done.
Pros: biodegradable, transplant the whole pot directly into the garden, completely free. Cons: collapse if overwatered, need a tray to hold them upright. Best for tomatoes, peppers, and other crops that get transplanted in 4-6 weeks before the newspaper softens too much.
Method 2: Toilet Paper and Paper Towel Rolls
Cardboard tubes cut into 2-3 inch sections make excellent seedling pots. Snip four small slits up the bottom edge, fold the flaps inward like a box, and stand them on a tray. Fill with seed-starting mix.
This method works particularly well for deep-rooted plants like beans, peas, and corn that hate root disturbance. The whole cardboard tube goes in the garden with the seedling, and the cardboard breaks down within a month.
Method 3: Egg Cartons
Standard 12-cell egg cartons make instant seedling trays. Punch a small drainage hole in each cell with a fork or knife, fill with mix, and plant. Cardboard egg cartons biodegrade and can be transplanted directly. Styrofoam cartons work too but need to be removed at transplant.
The downside is cell depth — egg cartons give you maybe an inch of root space, which is enough for lettuce, herbs, and small flowers but not for tomatoes or peppers. Use egg cartons for crops that transplant within 2-3 weeks of germination.
Method 4: Yogurt Cups and Sour Cream Containers
Single-serve yogurt cups (6-8 ounce size) are nearly ideal seed starting pots. Cell depth at 3-4 inches gives plenty of root room, plastic is rigid enough to handle moisture, and clear cups let you check root development without disturbing the seedling.
Drill or punch three to four drainage holes in the bottom of each cup. Save them year-round in a kitchen drawer — by spring planting time you’ll have plenty for a full garden’s worth of seedlings.
Method 5: Milk Jugs and Soda Bottles
Half-gallon milk jugs and 2-liter soda bottles cut horizontally produce 4-cell or 6-cell trays with built-in greenhouse domes. Cut the jug in half, fill the bottom with mix, plant seeds, and use the top as a humidity dome that comes off when seedlings need more air.
This is the right approach for winter sowing — a technique where hardy seeds spend winter outside in protected mini-greenhouses and germinate naturally when conditions warm. Marigolds, snapdragons, kale, and many native flowers thrive with winter sowing.
Method 6: Soil Blocks
The most sophisticated DIY method skips containers entirely. A soil blocker (Ladbrooke Mini-4 at $40, Mini-20 at $90) compresses moist soil into self-supporting cubes with a central depression for the seed. Cubes sit on a flat tray, roots air-prune at the edges, and transplanting is shockless.
This isn’t free — the blocker tool is the upfront cost — but it eliminates plastic from the seed-starting workflow permanently. Soil block mix is slightly different from standard seed-starting mix; recipes online from Eliot Coleman use peat, compost, sand, and a small amount of garden soil for cohesion.
Method 7: Plastic Food Containers
Berry clamshells, takeout containers, and large yogurt tubs with lids work as mini greenhouses for seedling germination. Punch drainage holes in the bottom, fill with mix, plant, and close the lid until seedlings emerge.
Strawberry clamshells are particularly good for this — the ventilation holes are already there, and the clear plastic lets light through. Once seedlings push the lid, transplant them to deeper individual containers.
Method 8: PVC Pipe Sections
For a more permanent setup, 2-3 inch diameter PVC pipe cut into 4-5 inch sections produces rigid, reusable seedling cells that last decades. Stand them upright on a flat tray and fill with mix.
The cells need to come off at transplant — slide the cylinder up while supporting the soil ball from below. Works well for deep-rooted crops where soil block depth would crack. Total material cost is about $15 for enough pipe to produce 50 cells.
Best Seed Starting Mix
The container doesn’t matter if the mix is wrong. Garden soil is too dense, holds too much water, and often carries fungus that damps off seedlings. Real seed-starting mix is a sterile blend of peat or coco coir, perlite, and a small amount of vermiculite.
Pro-Mix Premium Seed Starting Mix ($15 per 16-quart bag) is the standard commercial option. For a DIY mix at lower cost, blend 4 parts peat moss, 2 parts perlite, 1 part vermiculite, and a tablespoon of garden lime per gallon. Skip commercial potting soil — it’s too rich for new seedlings.
Watering Technique
Bottom-watering wins for every DIY tray. Set the cells in a tray of water and let capillary action draw moisture up through the drainage holes. This avoids dislodging seeds, prevents damping off (which spreads through wet leaves), and waters more evenly than top spraying.
Let the trays sit in water for 15-30 minutes, then drain off any excess. Repeat when the top of the mix feels dry to the touch, typically every 2-3 days indoors.
Light Requirements
Window light alone usually produces leggy seedlings that stretch toward whatever sun is available. A cheap T5 fluorescent fixture or LED grow bar at 100-200 watts above the trays produces compact, strong seedlings. Position the light 2-4 inches above the seedling tops and raise as they grow.
Run lights 14-16 hours per day for most vegetables. A simple plug-in timer ($10-$15) handles the schedule automatically and frees you from remembering.
