Does Polyester Shrink? What the Care Label Will Not Tell You

You pulled a brand-new polyester athletic shirt out of the dryer and it now fits like a kid’s medium. So does polyester shrink after all the manufacturer claims about wrinkle-free, shape-keeping performance? The short answer: pure polyester resists shrinking at normal laundry temperatures but absolutely will shrink under heat above its glass transition point, around 158°F. The longer answer involves blends, knit construction, and the difference between fiber shrinkage and fabric deformation, which most laundry guides confuse.

The Science of Polyester and Heat

Polyester is a synthetic plastic, specifically polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Unlike cotton or wool, polyester fibers do not absorb water, so they do not shrink from moisture alone. They shrink only when heat exceeds the polymer’s glass transition temperature of approximately 158°F (70°C), at which point the fiber chains relax and the fabric structure deforms.

A standard home washing machine on hot setting runs at 130°F. A home dryer on high heat reaches 135 to 145°F at the drum surface, but the air temperature inside loaded fabric can spike to 160°F or higher in spots, especially with overloaded drums. That spike is enough to start shrinking polyester garments, particularly thinner knits.

How Much Shrinkage to Expect

For pure polyester clothing washed and dried at recommended temperatures, expect zero to 1 percent shrinkage over the garment’s lifetime. For pure polyester run through high-heat drying repeatedly, expect 3 to 5 percent shrinkage cumulative over 10 to 15 wash cycles. That is roughly half an inch on a 16-inch shoulder seam.

For polyester blends, the shrinkage is dominated by the other fiber. A 60 percent cotton, 40 percent polyester blend will shrink 4 to 7 percent from the cotton portion alone. Polyester-spandex blends (like activewear with 92/8 ratio) can shrink up to 10 percent from heat damage to the elastane component, which breaks down faster than polyester itself.

Common Polyester Items That Do Shrink

  • Athletic shirts and shorts: Almost always blends with spandex, very heat-sensitive
  • Fleece sweatshirts: The brushed surface mats and the garment loses 2 to 4 percent in dimensions
  • Polyester-cotton blend t-shirts: Cotton portion shrinks, polyester does not, garment distorts
  • Lined dress pants and skirts: The lining (often acetate or polyester) shrinks at a different rate than the shell
  • Cheap fast-fashion polyester: Lower-quality polyester with less thorough heat-setting at the mill shrinks more

If a garment is labeled “moisture-wicking” or “performance” fabric, it is almost certainly a polyester-spandex or polyester-nylon blend, and high heat is the enemy.

How to Prevent Polyester from Shrinking

Three rules cover 95 percent of the situations:

Wash in cold or warm, never hot. Cold water (below 80°F) is far below the polyester transition temperature and prevents any shrinkage from the wash cycle. Most modern detergents (Tide Coldwater, Persil ProClean) clean effectively in cold water.

Skip the dryer or use low heat only. Air drying preserves polyester garments indefinitely. If you must use a dryer, set it to delicate or low heat (around 125°F) and pull garments out while slightly damp. The residual moisture finishes evaporating without further shrinkage.

Iron only on synthetic setting. Most home irons have a synthetic or polyester setting at around 300°F at the soleplate, but the fabric itself only reaches about 200°F because of the air gap and steam. Avoid the cotton or linen settings, which reach 400°F and will melt or shrink polyester rapidly.

Can You Unshrink Polyester?

Sometimes, depending on whether the fibers actually shrank or whether the knit structure simply collapsed. Try this method on a shrunken polyester garment:

  1. Fill a basin with lukewarm water (about 85°F) and add 2 tablespoons of hair conditioner
  2. Submerge the garment and soak for 20 to 30 minutes
  3. Remove without rinsing and gently stretch the fabric back to its original dimensions on a flat towel
  4. Pin the corners or roll in a dry towel to maintain shape
  5. Air dry flat, restretching every 30 minutes as it dries

This works for mild to moderate shrinkage. If the polymer chains have crystallized fully (you cannot stretch the fabric at all), the garment is permanently set and no home method will recover it. Polyester sweaters and fleece items respond best to this treatment because the knit structure has more give. Tightly woven polyester fabrics like dress shirts are much harder to recover.

Does Polyester Shrink Differently by Garment Type?

Yes, and the construction matters more than people realize. A jersey knit polyester (typical t-shirt fabric) shrinks more than a woven polyester (typical dress shirt fabric) because knits have more dimensional give to begin with. Tighter weaves like microfiber sheets resist shrinkage almost completely.

Fleece and brushed polyester surfaces have an additional issue beyond shrinkage: the napped fibers mat and pill under heat, which makes the fabric thinner and stiffer even when dimensions barely change. Once fleece is matted, it does not recover.

Reading the Care Label Correctly

Manufacturers print the maximum safe washing temperature for a reason. A label showing 30°C (86°F) means the manufacturer cannot guarantee the garment survives hotter water. They are not being conservative for legal reasons alone, they have tested the fabric and know where it fails.

A circle with a “P” inside means the garment is dry-clean only with petroleum solvents. A circle with an “F” means any dry-cleaning fluid except trichloroethylene. A square with a circle inside means tumble dry, with one dot for low, two for medium, and three for high. Polyester garments almost always have one or two dots, never three.

The Bottom Line for Most Wardrobes

Wash polyester in cold water with a normal detergent. Skip the dryer when you can, and when you cannot, use low heat. Pull garments out promptly. This routine adds maybe 30 seconds to laundry day and roughly doubles the useful life of every polyester item you own.

If you do shrink something, try the conditioner-soak method before throwing it out. Worst case, the garment becomes a workout shirt for the gym, where fit matters less than function. Best case, you get the original size back and learn to respect the heat limit going forward.
