Reverse Conversion: 3-Wire Cord to 4-Wire

If your home was rewired and you now have a 4-wire outlet but a dryer with a 3-wire cord, the steps reverse:

  1. Buy a NEMA 14-30P 4-wire cord ($22-$32)
  2. Remove the bonding strap entirely (do not just bend it aside — fully disconnect it)
  3. Connect black and red to the outer hot terminals
  4. Connect white to the center neutral
  5. Connect green to the chassis ground screw (where the strap used to attach)
