USG Easy Sand and Sheetrock Powders
USG dominates the residential drywall powder market in North America. Easy Sand 20 sets in 20 minutes after mixing, Easy Sand 45 in 45 minutes, and Easy Sand 90 in 90 minutes. The brand offers Durabond in 20, 45, and 90 minute versions as well, with significantly higher strength but much harder sanding.
Most residential patches use Easy Sand 45 for the balance between workable time and overnight progress. A 20-pound bag costs $14 to $18 and covers roughly 200 to 300 square feet of patch work at typical coverage rates.
Mixing Ratios and Technique
Setting compound mixes at roughly 2 parts powder to 1 part cool clean water by volume. Pour the powder into a clean 5-gallon bucket, then add water slowly while mixing with a drill-mounted paddle like the Marshalltown 14-inch Mud Mixer at $30. Start at low RPM, around 300, to avoid splashing, then increase to 600 once incorporated.

Surface Prep Before Application
Sand existing painted or unpainted drywall lightly with 120-grit paper to remove loose paper fibers and dust. Vacuum thoroughly with a HEPA-filter vacuum like the Festool CT 26 or Dewalt DXV09P at $250 to $500. Drywall dust is fine enough to bypass standard shop vac filters, where it then blows back into the room.

Fiber mesh tape from Saint-Gobain ADFORS works only with setting-type compounds. Premixed joint compound does not penetrate the open mesh structure and creates a weak bond that often shows hairline cracks within a year.
Sanding and Finish Quality
Setting-type powder sands harder than drying-type mud because the cured product is closer to plaster than cardboard. Easy Sand formulations sand more easily than Durabond, but both require firm pressure with 150 to 220 grit paper. Common Mistakes to Avoid
Mixing setting compound with warm water accelerates set time, sometimes cutting Easy Sand 45 to 15 minutes of working time. Cool tap water gives full open time. Adding more powder to thicken a too-wet batch ruins the chemistry and prevents proper hardening; start fresh instead.
Reusing buckets without cleaning between batches contaminates new mix with hardening particles that accelerate set time. Wash buckets with hot water and a stiff brush immediately after each session. Once setting compound hardens in a bucket, hammer and chisel are the only practical removal tools.
Cost and Coverage Numbers
A 4-by-8 sheet of drywall with three seams typically uses 5 to 8 pounds of setting compound for full taping and finishing. A 1,000-square-foot remodel with drywall throughout requires roughly 60 to 80 pounds of powder plus 4 to 6 buckets of premixed topping. Total mud cost for an average room runs $30 to $80, making compound selection a small line item relative to drywall sheets and labor.
