Increase speed once the track is established and work in smooth, steady strokes, keeping the blade parallel to the tile edges rather than angled into them. Set a depth target of about two-thirds of the joint, or until you hit solid, well-bonded grout; you do not need to reach the substrate for regrouting, and cutting deeper risks scoring waterproofing membranes behind wall tile.

Leave the last sliver against each tile edge for a light finishing pass or a quick scrape with a hand-held carbide rake. The power tool does 90 percent of the removal, and the hand tool does the 10 percent nearest the glaze, where a slip costs you a tile. Vacuum the open joints thoroughly, wipe with a damp sponge, and let them dry before packing new grout.
