Rubber mats are cheap and DIY-friendly but trap urine underneath and weigh 100 pounds each, which is brutal on aging backs. Porous systems eliminate that lift problem entirely but require excavation and a proper stone base. Grid-and-fill costs the least per square foot but does nothing for stall concussion — it shines outdoors in high-traffic gates and run-ins.
Concrete with epoxy paint stays popular in feed rooms and tack rooms because it sweeps clean, but never use it bare under standing horses. The compression load on coffin and pastern joints accelerates ringbone and navicular changes over a riding career.
Installation Mistakes That Cost You
The single biggest field failure is skipping the screed step. If your stone dust base is off by more than 3/8 inch over 10 feet, mats rock, edges curl, and urine pools in the low spots within six months. Use a long screed board and a 4-foot level on every stall. Second mistake: butting mats edge-to-edge instead of beveling them tight against the wall with a 1/4 inch gap for swelling. Maintenance and Lifespan
