Floating Flooring: The Complete Guide to Floating Floor Systems

Floating flooring is any floor that sits on top of the subfloor without being nailed, stapled, or glued down. Instead, the planks or tiles lock together at the edges and “float” as a single unit over an underlayment. It is the most popular installation method for laminate, luxury vinyl plank, and engineered hardwood — and for good reason. Floating floors install faster, cost less in labor, work over almost any subfloor, and can be removed or replaced without damaging the structure underneath.

How Floating Floors Work

A floating flooring system relies on gravity, friction, and interlocking joints to stay in place. Here is the basic anatomy, from the bottom up:

Foam Underlayment

The most common and affordable option. Standard polyethylene foam (2 mm to 3 mm) provides basic cushion and sound dampening. Many foam underlayments include a built-in moisture barrier for concrete subfloor installations.

Cork Underlayment

Attached Underlayment

Many mid-range and premium LVP and laminate products come with underlayment already attached to the bottom of each plank. This simplifies installation and ensures consistent coverage.   • Hollow sound: Without proper underlayment, floating floors can sound hollow or clicky when walked on. This is the most common complaint.
  • Movement potential: Floating floors can shift slightly over time, especially in rooms with heavy furniture movement or if expansion gaps are insufficient.
  • Not ideal for very large open areas: Rooms over 40 feet in any dimension may need transition strips to break up the floating span and accommodate expansion.
  • Expansion gap visibility: The required 1/4-inch perimeter gap must be hidden with baseboards or molding, which adds a finishing step.
  • Less solid feel than glued floors: Glue-down installations feel more solid and planted. Floating floors have a slight flex and give, though quality underlayment minimizes this.
  • Height addition: Floating floors add height (underlayment + flooring = 6 mm to 15 mm), which may require trimming door casings and adjusting door bottoms.

Best Situations for Floating Floors

Floating flooring is the best installation method in these situations:

Concrete Subfloors

You cannot nail into concrete (without specialized equipment), and glue-down requires moisture testing and surface prep. Floating installation over a moisture-barrier underlayment is by far the most practical approach for concrete slabs.

Basements

Basement concrete is often slightly damp. A floating floor with a proper moisture barrier keeps the flooring safe while allowing it to be removed if water issues arise. Glued or nailed flooring in a basement is difficult to repair after flooding.

DIY Projects

If you are installing your own floor, floating click-lock is the method to use. No specialty tools, no messy adhesive, no risk of nailing mistakes. It is genuinely beginner-friendly.

Over Existing Flooring

When Not to Use a Floating Floor

Floating installation is not always the best choice:

  • Very wide planks (7+ inches) in engineered hardwood: Wide planks have more expansion potential and benefit from glue-down installation for stability
  • Rooms larger than 40 x 40 feet: Continuous floating spans this large risk buckling. Use transition strips or choose glue-down
  • Heavy commercial traffic: Glue-down is more stable under shopping cart wheels, pallet jacks, and constant foot traffic
  • Uneven subfloors: If the subfloor has dips greater than 3/16 inch over 10 feet, fix them before floating, or use glue-down which is more tolerant of slight unevenness
  • Rooms with floor drains: Water drainage areas require sealed, adhered flooring

Installation Basics

While specific steps vary by material, here are the universal basics for floating flooring installation.

Subfloor Preparation

  • Clean the subfloor thoroughly — remove all debris, dust, and old adhesive
  • Check for flatness: no more than 3/16 inch variation over 10 feet
  • Fill low spots with self-leveling compound and sand down high spots
  • For concrete subfloors, perform a moisture test (calcium chloride test or relative humidity test)

Underlayment Installation

  • Roll out underlayment in the same direction as the flooring planks
  • Butt seams together (do not overlap foam underlayment — it creates bumps)
  • Tape seams with the manufacturer’s recommended tape
  • Do not use two layers of cushioned underlayment — too much flex damages click-lock joints

Plank Installation

  • Start from the longest, most visible wall and work toward the door
  • Place 1/4-inch spacers against all walls, cabinets, and fixed objects
  • Click the long side first, then engage the short end
  • Stagger end joints by at least 6 inches (12+ inches preferred)
  • Use a tapping block and pull bar for tight fits — never hammer directly on the plank edge
  • Cut the last row to fit, maintaining the expansion gap

Finishing

  • Remove spacers after all planks are installed
  • Install baseboards or quarter-round molding to cover the expansion gap
  • Add transition strips at doorways and where the floating floor meets other flooring materials

Common Problems and Solutions

Hollow Sound

Cause: Inadequate underlayment or air gaps between the underlayment and subfloor.

Solution: Use a quality underlayment (3 mm foam minimum or cork). Ensure the subfloor is flat and clean before laying underlayment.

Buckling or Peaks

Cause: Insufficient expansion gap. The floor has expanded and hit the wall or a fixed object.

Solution: Remove baseboards, trim the floor edge to restore the 1/4-inch gap, and reinstall baseboards. Check for any pinch points (door frames, pipes, heavy furniture trapping the floor).

Gaps Between Planks

Cause: Extreme humidity changes, improperly engaged click-lock joints, or low-quality locking systems.

Solution: Maintain indoor humidity between 35% and 55%. For existing gaps, you may need to disassemble and reassemble the affected section, ensuring every joint clicks fully.

End-Lifting (Peaking at Short Joints)
