French drains look simple — a trench, some gravel, perforated pipe, done. The drain must end somewhere water can leave the system — a daylighted outlet on a downhill slope, a dry well, a storm sewer connection (where code allows), or a sump pump basin. Burying the end of the pipe and hoping water dissipates into the surrounding soil works only in well-drained sandy soils. 7. Trench Too Shallow
For perimeter drains intercepting groundwater before it reaches a foundation, the trench bottom should sit at or below the footing level — typically 4 to 8 feet deep depending on basement depth. Surface drains for yard ponding can be shallower (18 to 24 inches), but anything less than 12 inches won’t catch enough water to be useful.
