Garbage Can Fence: How to Build a Trash Enclosure That Actually Works

Three trash cans lined up next to your driveway is the fastest way to make a $400,000 home look like a rental. A simple garbage can fence hides the bins, blocks wind from knocking them over, deters raccoons, and keeps the curb-appeal photos from getting wrecked. Built well, it lasts 15 to 20 years and turns an eyesore into something that reads as intentional landscaping.

Sizing the Enclosure

Standard 96-gallon municipal wheeled bins measure roughly 28 inches deep, 28 inches wide, and 46 inches tall. A 65-gallon cart is about 26 by 24 by 41 inches. Your enclosure needs to fit the bins plus 4 to 6 inches of clearance on each side and at least 8 inches in front for the lid swing.

A two-bin enclosure typically lands around 5 feet wide by 3 feet deep by 5 feet tall. A three-bin version with recycling and yard waste runs 7 to 8 feet wide. Build at least 4 inches taller than the bin for clean visual lines and to hide the lid bumps.

Set 4×4 posts in concrete footings 24 to 30 inches deep — below the frost line in cold climates. Skipping concrete and using only ground-driven post anchors works for ultra-lightweight enclosures, but the posts will lean within 2 to 3 years from wind and bin contact.

Space corner posts at the exact enclosure width, then add intermediate posts every 4 to 6 feet for spans longer than 6 feet. Set posts 1 to 2 inches above grade on a small concrete crown so water sheds away rather than wicking into the post base.

Ventilation Matters More Than You Think

A fully sealed box around trash bins traps gas, heat, and odor. By August, opening the gate releases a wall of stink. Build with 1/4 to 1/2 inch gaps between vertical slats for airflow. The visual privacy is still effective from 10 feet away — passersby won’t see the bins, but odor escapes evenly instead of pooling.

Skip a roof on most enclosures. An open top lets rain rinse the bins occasionally and dramatically reduces summer heat buildup. If your area has heavy snow or you want to hide top-loading bins from second-floor neighbors, add a slatted top with the same 1/4-inch gaps.

The Gate is the Hard Part

Gates fail more often than fences. A 5-foot-wide gate that holds together for 10 years requires diagonal bracing — a 2×4 running corner to corner from the upper hinge side to the lower latch side. Without bracing, the gate sags within months under its own weight.

Use exterior-rated stainless steel hinges, ideally three per gate for spans over 4 feet wide. Skip basic gate hardware from big box stores; spend the extra $25 on T-hinges rated for 100+ pounds. A simple gravity latch lets you push bins in with one hand on garbage day.

Animal-Proof Considerations

Raccoons in suburban areas have figured out how to flip lids and roll bins. Bears in mountain regions need much more serious deterrence. For raccoon-prone areas, the enclosure alone is usually enough — they generally won’t squeeze through a tight gate to reach an enclosed bin.

For bear country, the enclosure needs a locking gate, ideally with a carabiner on a hasp, and the bins themselves should be bear-resistant rated. Some municipalities require certified bear-proof bins regardless of the enclosure.

Step-by-Step Build Outline

  1. Mark the four corners and dig postholes 24 to 30 inches deep
  2. Set 4×4 pressure-treated posts in concrete, plumbed and braced for 24 hours of cure
  3. Install horizontal 2×4 cleats at top, middle, and bottom — typically 4 inches off the ground
  4. Cut and attach vertical slats with 1/4-inch spacing, securing with stainless screws
  5. Build the gate frame as a separate unit with diagonal bracing, then attach to one side post
  6. Install the latch hardware, test for full bin clearance through the swing
  7. Apply finish — exterior stain or sealer for cedar, paint for pressure-treated

Plan a full weekend — 12 to 16 hours of labor including footing cure time. Two people make it dramatically easier, especially during slat installation.

Floor or No Floor?

Most garbage can fences skip a floor. The ground works fine, especially if you set crushed gravel underneath for drainage. Adding a wooden floor traps spills and rots within 5 years even with pressure-treated lumber. If your enclosure sits on a paved driveway, a 3-foot square of stamped concrete or brick pavers under each bin makes cleanup easier.

Slope the ground away from the enclosure at about 1/4 inch per foot so any bin leaks drain to the side rather than pooling.

Permit and HOA Notes

Most municipalities allow a 6-foot-tall enclosure without a permit if it sits in the side or back yard. Front yard placement may have stricter rules — typically capped at 4 feet tall. HOAs often require approval and may dictate materials. Check before building.

Setbacks from property lines are usually 3 to 5 feet, and at least 5 feet from any door or window per IRC.
