The trailing vines covered in tiny orange blooms shaped like leaping fish that earned this plant its common name only show up when the light is right. Goldfish plant light requirements sit in a narrow band that frustrates most first-time owners: too little light and the plant survives but never blooms, too much direct sun and the leaves scorch within a week. The Columnea gloriosa (and its close cousin Nematanthus gregarius) is native to the canopy understory of Central and South American rainforests, where it gets bright filtered light all day but rarely sees direct sun. Replicating that in a US home means thinking like a forest, not a windowsill.
How Much Light Does a Goldfish Plant Need
The practical target is bright indirect light measured at 2,000 to 5,000 foot-candles for 12 to 14 hours per day. For comparison, a sunny south-facing windowsill at noon can hit 10,000 foot-candles. The interior of a north-facing room three feet from the window might only reach 100 to 300 foot-candles. The goldfish plant wants to live somewhere in the middle of that range.
If you want a precise measurement, a basic Dr.Meter LX1330B foot-candle meter runs about $35 on Amazon. Aim for readings in the 200 to 500 foot-candle range at the plant’s location. Anything under 100 means too dark for blooms, anything over 1,000 sustained risks leaf burn.
Best Window Exposures by Direction
- East-facing window: Ideal. Two to four hours of morning sun followed by bright indirect light all day. The morning sun is gentle enough not to scorch.
- North-facing window: Workable in summer with no direct sun ever, but usually too dim in winter for blooms. Add a grow light October through March.
- West-facing window: Acceptable if you set the plant 3 to 4 feet back from the glass to avoid hot afternoon sun. A sheer curtain helps.
- South-facing window: Too intense if the plant sits within 2 feet of the glass. Pull it back 5 to 6 feet, or filter with a sheer curtain.
Hanging baskets often end up over a window. Be careful: light intensifies as you move up toward the ceiling, and the back of a goldfish plant trailing down catches less light than the top. Rotate the basket 90 degrees once a week to keep growth even.

Distance and Duration
If using a grow light, place it 12 to 24 inches above the plant. Too close burns the leaves and bleaches color. Too far and the inverse-square law kicks in fast (double the distance, quarter the intensity).
