White grubs are the C-shaped, cream-colored larvae of scarab beetles, mainly Japanese beetles, masked chafers, June beetles, and European chafers. If you skipped the preventive window and now have live, feeding grubs in August or September, you need a curative, or rescue, product. Curatives work best on small, actively feeding grubs, so apply them in late summer to early fall while grubs are near the surface and still young. Water curatives in with 0.5 inch right after spreading, and treat only the infested zones plus a buffer rather than blanketing the whole property.

Homeowners who want to skip synthetic insecticides have real biological tools, though they work more slowly. Beneficial nematodes, specifically Heterorhabditis bacteriophora, are microscopic worms that hunt down grubs and release bacteria that kill them. Apply them to moist soil in the evening, because UV light and drying kill nematodes fast, and keep the soil damp for two weeks afterward. Late summer, when grubs are young and soil is warm, is the sweet spot.

Milky spore (Paenibacillus popilliae) is a bacterial disease specific to Japanese beetle grubs. It can build up in the soil over several seasons and provide long-term suppression, but it is slow, it only targets Japanese beetle larvae, and results are inconsistent in cooler northern soils.
