Hallway Attic Fan: Complete Guide for Homeowners

Window air conditioners cool a single room, central AC cools the whole house at high cost, but a properly sized hallway attic fan can pull the entire house through a temperature drop of 10 to 20 degrees in about 20 minutes for less than a dime an hour. These fans (sometimes called whole-house fans) mount in the ceiling of a central hallway, suck cool outdoor air in through open windows, and exhaust hot air through attic vents. The catch is sizing and installation matter more than brand. A fan that is too small does nothing, and one that is too large pulls so hard it can backdraft a gas water heater into the living room.

How Hallway Attic Fans Work

A whole-house fan creates a pressure differential by exhausting attic air to the outside. Open windows downstairs become air intakes. Cool evening air rushes in across the living space, climbs through the ceiling vent, and exits the attic through soffit, ridge, or gable vents. The result is a constant breeze in every open room and a fast attic cool-down that drops the surface temperature of the upstairs ceilings by 25 degrees over the first hour.

These fans work best in dry climates where evening temperatures drop into the 60s or low 70s. In humid Gulf Coast or Southeast regions, summer night air is too damp to help much, and the fan can actually push humidity into the house. Coastal California, the Mountain West, and most of the Plains are textbook whole-house fan country.

Sizing by Square Footage and Ceiling Height

The accepted sizing rule is 2 to 3 cubic feet per minute (CFM) of fan capacity per square foot of living space, assuming 8-foot ceilings. Bump the multiplier to 3 CFM if your ceilings are 9 or 10 feet tall, and to 3.5 CFM for vaulted spaces.

Most homes are under-vented at the attic and need extra gable or roof vents added before the fan goes in.

Frame the joist opening to fit the fan shroud (usually 22 by 22 inches or 30 by 30 inches depending on the model). Homes built after 2010 with sealed-combustion water heaters and high-efficiency furnaces are largely immune to this issue. For homes in dry climates, replacing 30 nights of AC with the hallway attic fan saves 100 to 150 dollars per cooling season and adds noticeable comfort because the air actually moves rather than just sitting. Payback on the equipment and installation usually lands between 4 and 7 cooling seasons, faster if your utility rate is above the national average.
