How to Build a Concrete Wall: Footing to Finish for DIYers

A poured concrete wall lasts a century. A bad one cracks in two seasons and costs more to fix than it did to build. Learning how to build a concrete wall the right way comes down to four things — proper footing, square forms, enough rebar, and a controlled pour. Skip any of them and you waste a weekend plus several thousand dollars in materials.

This guide walks through a freestanding or short retaining wall under 4 feet tall. Anything taller, especially a retaining wall holding back grade, needs an engineer’s stamp and is not a true DIY project.

Tools and Materials You Need

Before breaking ground, gather everything. Running to the store mid-pour will ruin your day.

  • 3/4-inch plywood for forms (BC grade, around $55 a sheet)
  • 2×4 lumber for bracing and stakes
  • Form ties or snap ties — about $1.25 each
  • #4 rebar (1/2-inch) and tie wire
  • Concrete mix — 4,000 PSI for structural walls
  • Concrete vibrator or rubber mallet
  • Mason’s line, level, framing square
  • Wheelbarrow and mortar hoe (or a mixer for jobs over 1 cubic yard)

For walls over 8 feet long, ordering ready-mix concrete delivered by truck is cheaper and easier than mixing 80-pound bags. A short load delivery typically costs $200 plus around $160 per cubic yard.

Step 1: Plan and Lay Out the Wall

Mark your wall location with stakes and mason’s line. Check local codes — most jurisdictions require a permit for any wall over 3 to 4 feet tall, and setbacks from property lines are usually 3 to 5 feet minimum. Call 811 before you dig to mark utilities.

Square the layout with the 3-4-5 method. Measure 3 feet along one line, 4 feet along the perpendicular line, and the diagonal between those points should measure exactly 5 feet. Adjust until it does.

Step 2: Dig the Footing

The footing supports the wall and prevents settlement. Dig a trench at least twice as wide as the wall is thick and below your local frost line. In northern states, that means 36 to 48 inches deep. In the South, 12 to 18 inches is often enough.

Trench width matters. For an 8-inch-thick wall, dig a 16- to 20-inch-wide footing trench, 8 to 12 inches deep. Compact the bottom with a hand tamper. If the soil is soft or clay-heavy, add 4 inches of compacted gravel before pouring the footing.

Step 3: Pour the Footing

Set two pieces of #4 rebar lengthwise in the trench, spaced evenly and held 3 inches off the bottom with rebar chairs. Pour concrete to your desired depth, screed it level, and embed vertical rebar dowels every 24 inches that will tie into the wall above. The dowels should stick up 18 to 24 inches from the footing.

Let the footing cure for 48 to 72 hours before building forms on top. Cover with plastic if rain is forecast.

Step 4: Build and Brace the Forms

Forms hold the wet concrete in place until it cures. Build them from 3/4-inch plywood with 2×4 vertical studs every 16 inches and horizontal walers every 18 to 24 inches. Use snap ties to hold both sides together at the correct wall thickness — typically 6 to 8 inches.

Brace the forms diagonally with 2x4s staked into the ground every 4 feet on each side. Concrete is heavy. A 4-foot-tall wet wall pushes about 600 pounds per square foot of lateral force on your forms. Skimp on bracing and the forms blow out mid-pour.

Step 5: Place Rebar in the Wall

Tie horizontal #4 rebar inside the forms every 16 inches vertically. Tie the horizontal rebar to the vertical dowels coming up from the footing. Maintain 2 inches of clearance from any form face — concrete cover protects the steel from rust over decades.

For a typical 4-foot wall that is 8 inches thick and 10 feet long, you will use about 80 to 100 linear feet of #4 rebar. At roughly $0.50 per foot, that runs $40 to $50.

Step 6: Pour the Wall

Pour in lifts no taller than 18 inches. Vibrate or rod the concrete after each lift to release trapped air and consolidate the mix. A handheld concrete vibrator rents for $35 a day at any tool yard. If you do not have one, a piece of #4 rebar repeatedly plunged up and down works in a pinch.

Work fast. Concrete starts setting in 60 to 90 minutes once mixed. For a 1-cubic-yard wall, you have a tight window. Have at least one helper for any pour over half a yard.

Step 7: Finish the Top and Strip Forms

Once the wall is filled, screed the top flat with a 2×4. Use a magnesium float for a smooth finish or leave it textured for a natural look. Insert J-bolts or anchor bolts for any future fence or railing while the concrete is still wet.

Cover the wall with plastic and let it cure for 48 hours minimum before stripping forms. For full strength, concrete needs 28 days of moist curing — but you can backfill and use the wall after 7 days at about 70 percent strength.

Common Mistakes When Building Concrete Walls

The same errors trip up nearly every DIYer learning how to build a concrete wall. Pouring concrete that is too wet weakens the cured strength dramatically — never add more water than the bag specifies. Skipping rebar to save $50 produces a wall that cracks within a year. Stripping forms too early causes blowouts and edge damage.

Plan for at least three full weekends. Day one is layout and footing. Day two is form building, rebar, and the wall pour. Day three is form stripping, finishing, and backfill. Rush it and you spend a fourth weekend repairing what should have been done right the first time.
