Smelly sneakers are a bacterial problem, not a dirt problem. Sweat by itself is nearly odorless. The smell comes from bacteria, mostly Brevibacterium and Staphylococcus species, feeding on the proteins and salts in dried sweat trapped inside the shoe. Knit uppers from Nike Flyknit or Adidas Primeknit machine wash on gentle cold cycles only. Leather sneakers like the Adidas Stan Smith or Common Projects Achilles cannot be machine washed without damage, the leather will crack and the glue will fail.
Check the tag inside the shoe or the manufacturer’s website before any wet cleaning. Mistakes are unforgiving. A pair of leather Air Force 1s tossed in a washing machine will emerge structurally intact but cosmetically ruined.
Method One: Baking Soda Deodorizing
For smelly but otherwise clean sneakers, the cheapest fix is straight baking soda. Pour 2 tablespoons of Arm and Hammer baking soda into each shoe. Tap the shoe to distribute powder into the toe box and over the insole. Leave overnight, at minimum 8 hours, ideally 24. Tap the powder out into the trash and shake the shoes vigorously over a sink to clear residual powder.
Baking soda works by neutralizing the volatile fatty acids the bacteria produce. It doesn’t kill the bacteria, so the odor returns over weeks of wear. That’s why this method is the maintenance pass between deeper cleanings, not a permanent solution.
Method Two: OxiClean Soak
For sneakers that can take water, OxiClean Versatile Stain Remover ($10 per box) hits both the dirt and the bacteria. Fill a sink or bucket with warm water at about 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Add 2 tablespoons of OxiClean per gallon of water and stir until dissolved. Submerge the sneakers, weight them down with a plate so they stay under the water, and soak for 6 hours.

Set the machine to cold water, gentle cycle, low spin. Use half the normal detergent dose of a mild liquid like Tide Free and Gentle or Method 4X Concentrated. Add 1/2 cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle. Vinegar lowers pH and kills residual bacteria.
Never put sneakers in a dryer. The heat melts adhesives and warps foam midsoles. Air dry only, stuffed with crumpled newspaper to absorb moisture and hold shape. Drying time is 24 to 48 hours in normal indoor humidity.
Method Four: The Freezer Trick
An old laundry hack that actually works on materials that can’t be washed. Bacteria die at temperatures below 14 degrees Fahrenheit. A standard kitchen freezer runs at 0 to 5 degrees Fahrenheit, well within the kill zone. Seal each sneaker in a gallon ziplock bag to keep them clean and prevent odors from migrating to food. Freeze for 48 hours.
The freezer method works best for leather sneakers, suede shoes, or athletic shoes with insoles that can’t be removed. Bring shoes back to room temperature before wearing or the cold contracts the foam and feels unpleasant. Won’t deep clean the dirt but eliminates the smell at the source.
Treating the Insoles Separately
Insoles absorb most of the sweat and harbor most of the bacteria. Even after washing the shoe, smelly insoles will reinfect the upper. Remove insoles whenever possible. Hand wash them with Dawn dish soap and a soft brush, rinse thoroughly, and air dry on a windowsill for 24 hours.
