How to Clean the House: Best Methods and Tips

Most homeowners spend twice as long cleaning as they need to because they go room by room and re-cross their own dirt. Professional cleaners work the entire house in a specific order: top down, dry before wet, far corner toward the door. Once you learn how to clean the house this way, a 1,600 sq ft home that used to take all Saturday takes 2.5 hours, deeper, with better results.

This is the system I taught my crew when I ran a residential cleaning service in Charlotte. It scales from a studio to a 3,500 sq ft suburban home.

Build a Caddy, Not a Cabinet

The biggest time sink is walking back to the supply closet four times per room. A single 6-quart caddy that travels with you holds everything you need. Stock it with:

  • Method All-Purpose Cleaner (Pink Grapefruit) for nearly every surface, diluted 1:32 in a spray bottle
  • Bar Keepers Friend powder for porcelain, stainless, and chrome
  • Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner pre-mixed in a spray bottle
  • Distilled white vinegar at full strength for hard water and glass
  • Two stacks of microfiber cloths: blue for general, yellow for kitchen, pink for bathrooms
  • A pack of Magic Erasers
  • A toilet brush and a non-toilet scrub brush

Add a fanny pack or apron with extra microfibers, a small flashlight, and a putty knife for stuck grime. The fanny pack saves you from setting down the caddy every time you need a clean cloth.

Work Top to Bottom, Left to Right

Gravity dictates the order. Cobwebs on ceilings, dust on ceiling fans, top of door frames, then mid-height surfaces, then floors. Within each room, work left to right in a single rotation so you do not skip surfaces or double back.

Start in the bedroom farthest from the kitchen. Strip beds, get laundry running, and let it cycle while you clean other rooms. Make beds at the end so freshly washed bedding goes on right before vacuum and mop.

Bathrooms: Soak First, Scrub Last

Bathrooms reward dwell time more than scrubbing time. Start by spraying the tub or shower with Method or a 1:1 vinegar and Dawn solution. Walk away for 10 to 15 minutes. While the bathroom soaks, clean another room.

Come back and the soap scum wipes off with a microfiber. Stubborn spots need a soft sponge and a sprinkle of Bar Keepers Friend, which contains oxalic acid that cuts hard water without scratching. Skip abrasive scouring pads on glossy ceramic and acrylic, which dull surfaces over hundreds of uses.

Toilets: pour 1/2 cup of Bar Keepers Friend or a commercial bowl cleaner into the bowl, brush under the rim, and let dwell while you wipe the exterior with Method on a yellow microfiber. Flush, then wipe the seat and lid with a fresh cloth. The base, hinges, and floor around the toilet get the most-missed grime.

Kitchens: Surfaces, Then Appliances, Then Floor

Clear counters fully before wiping. Move every coffee maker, toaster, and knife block. Counters wipe down with Method, then dry-buff with a microfiber to prevent streaks. Sinks: a pinch of Bar Keepers Friend, scrub with a damp sponge, rinse, dry.

Stainless steel appliances wipe in the direction of the grain with Method, then dry-buff. For fingerprints, Weiman Stainless Steel Wipes at $5 a tub work better than anything you can mix at home and last about 30 uses.

The microwave interior steams clean. Put a microwave-safe bowl with 1 cup of water and 2 tablespoons of vinegar inside, run on high for 3 minutes, let sit for 5 more minutes, then wipe out. The steam loosens splatter so it comes off without scrubbing.

Cabinet faces, especially near the stove, wipe down with diluted Method. Tops of upper cabinets accumulate cooking grease into a sticky film that requires Magic Eraser passes followed by a Method wipe.

Living and Family Rooms

Dust top down with a microfiber barely dampened with Method, not a feather duster which redistributes dust. Wipe TV screens with a dry microfiber only. Sprays or wet cloths damage anti-glare coatings.

Upholstered furniture gets a vacuum pass with the soft brush attachment, including under the cushions. For spot stains, blot (do not rub) with cold water and a tiny amount of Dawn Platinum. Always test in a hidden spot for colorfastness first.

Glass surfaces and mirrors clean with a 1:4 vinegar-water spray and a microfiber. Wipe in one direction inside, the opposite outside, so you can identify which side has streaks. Avoid paper towels, which streak more than they clean.

Bedrooms: Make the Bed Last

Dust nightstands, lamp bases, the top of the dresser, and any wall art. Vacuum under the bed if you can move it. Hair and dust accumulate fast in a bedroom, more than in any other room.

Change linens and remake the bed only at the end of the cleaning so freshly laundered sheets do not pick up airborne dust from other cleaning work. Pillows and comforters benefit from a 30-minute tumble in the dryer with two clean tennis balls every few weeks to refluff the fill.

Floors: The Final Pass

Vacuum every floor in the house before mopping any of it. A Shark Stratos or Dyson V15 with a hard-floor attachment handles both carpet and bare floors without changing setups. Pay attention to baseboards and corners.

Hardwood floors: Bona sprayed onto a microfiber pad, not the floor itself. Tile floors: Method diluted in a bucket, change the water at least twice in a 1,600 sq ft house. Vinyl plank: a barely damp microfiber mop. Excess water on any plank floor seeps into seams and ruins the locking edges over time.

Maintenance Habits That Cut Cleaning Time

Wipe down kitchen counters and sinks every night before bed. A 90-second pass keeps grime from setting and turns deep cleaning into maintenance. Squeegee the shower walls after every use. A glass shower stays scum-free for years with this single habit.

Run the dishwasher empty with vinegar once a month. Replace the HVAC filter every 60 to 90 days, depending on pet presence. Take shoes off at the door. Indoor air quality data from the EPA shows that household dust drops 60 to 80 percent in shoe-free homes.

How Often to Deep Clean Each Area

Surface cleaning weekly. Deep cleaning quarterly for kitchens and bathrooms. Annually for inside the oven, behind the fridge, under furniture, and ceiling fans. A cleaning schedule tied to seasons keeps anything from going past 12 weeks without attention.

Track it in a simple list on your phone. Routine beats heroic cleaning sessions every time. A house cleaned in 90-minute weekly passes always looks better than one rescued in a 6-hour Saturday.
