Apply Teflon Tape

Wrap Teflon tape around the shower arm threads three to five times in a clockwise direction (when looking at the arm head-on). Clockwise is critical — wrapping counterclockwise causes the tape to unravel when you thread on the new fitting. Press the tape firmly into the threads as you wrap, stretching it slightly for a tight seal.

Teflon tape creates a watertight seal without overtightening, which can crack fittings. Skip pipe dope or thread sealant compounds — they are overkill for shower connections and can gum up the threads, making future removal difficult.

Install the Diverter Mount or Bracket

Most handheld shower head kits connect to the shower arm using one of two methods. A diverter mount threads directly onto the shower arm and includes a built-in holder for the handheld head plus a port for the hose. This type lets you switch between a fixed position and handheld use with a lever or button.

Thread the diverter mount onto the shower arm by hand until snug, then tighten an additional quarter turn with the wrench. Do not overtighten — the connection should be firm but not forced. If your kit uses a separate slide bar or wall-mount bracket, follow the included instructions for mounting height (typically 72 to 78 inches from the floor for the highest bracket position).

Connect the Hose and Shower Head

Attach one end of the flexible hose to the diverter mount or shower arm fitting. Most hoses use standard 1/2-inch connections with rubber washers inside the coupling nuts. Check that the washer is seated properly before threading the nut on by hand. Tighten gently with the wrench — a quarter turn past hand-tight is sufficient.

Run the shower for two full minutes while watching each joint. Move the handheld head through its full range of motion — extend the hose fully, tilt it at various angles, and hang it back in the bracket. Some leaks only appear when the hose is stretched or positioned at certain angles that put tension on a joint.

Wall-Mount Bracket Options

If you want a secondary holder at a different height — for example, a lower position for seated bathing or kids — adhesive-mount brackets are available for $8 to $20. These stick to tile, glass, and fiberglass surround without drilling. Clean the mounting surface with rubbing alcohol, press the bracket firmly, and wait 24 hours before hanging the shower head.

For a permanent mount, drill into grout lines (never into the tile face) using a masonry bit. Use plastic anchors rated for wet areas and stainless steel screws. Troubleshooting Common Issues

Low water pressure after installation usually means a flow restrictor in the new shower head is limiting output. Most handheld heads include a small plastic or rubber disc inside the head inlet that caps flow at 2.0 or 2.5 gallons per minute. Removing or modifying this restrictor is possible but may violate local plumbing codes, so check regulations first.

A hose that kinks repeatedly needs replacement — chrome-plated plastic hoses are the worst offenders. Upgrade to a stainless steel or brass-core hose. If the diverter does not switch cleanly between fixed and handheld modes, disassemble it and check for debris or a stuck valve. Mineral buildup on the diverter seat is the usual culprit, and a 30-minute vinegar soak resolves it.
