Polyester is engineered to resist shrinking, which is great when you want a shirt to keep its shape and bad when you bought a size too large. The fibers are thermoplastic, meaning they soften and slightly contract under high heat, but they will never shrink the way 100% cotton does. Why Polyester Resists Shrinking
Polyester is a synthetic plastic fiber (technically polyethylene terephthalate, the same material as water bottles). It’s spun, stretched, and heat-set during manufacturing, locking the fibers into a stable shape. Standard washer and dryer cycles don’t get hot enough to disturb that set.
To shrink polyester, you need temperatures above 140°F sustained long enough for the fibers to relax. Even then, you’ll see at most a 5 to 10 percent reduction. A shirt one full size too big will probably never fit perfectly — but a shirt slightly loose can absolutely be brought in.
Method 1: Hot Wash + High-Heat Dryer
This is the safest, most repeatable approach and works on polyester blends as well as 100% poly.
- Turn the shirt inside out to protect any printing, embroidery, or finish.
- Wash on the hottest cycle your machine offers (typically 130-140°F sanitize cycle if you have one). Use a small amount of regular detergent.
- Move directly to the dryer on the highest heat setting, often labeled “high” or “cottons.”
- Run a full cycle (45 to 60 minutes). Do not pull the shirt out wet — the heat needs sustained dwell time.
- Let the shirt cool completely before trying it on. Polyester continues to set as it cools.
You can repeat the dryer cycle once if needed, but two cycles is the practical limit. Beyond that you risk yellowing white shirts or scorching dark dyes.
Method 2: Boiling Water Soak (Cotton Blends Only)
If your shirt is a polyester-cotton blend (50/50 or 60/40), boiling water can pull a more noticeable shrink because the cotton portion is doing most of the work.
- Bring a large pot of water to a rolling boil, then turn off the heat.
- Submerge the shirt fully and let it soak 20 to 30 minutes until the water is no longer hot.
- Wring it out gently and transfer to a high-heat dryer cycle.
Skip this method on 100% polyester — pure poly in boiling water can become slick and slightly stretched rather than shrunken, especially on cheap fast-fashion shirts. Always check the care label for “do not boil” warnings on technical fabrics.
Method 3: Iron with Steam
For targeted shrinking — say, the body fits but the sleeves are too long — a steam iron lets you shrink one area without affecting the rest.
- Dampen the section you want to shrink with a spray bottle.
- Set the iron to the polyester or synthetic setting (around 300°F, or a single dot on most irons). Engage the steam burst function.
- Place a thin cotton pressing cloth between the iron and the shirt to prevent shine or melting.
- Press firmly for 10 to 15 seconds at a time, working slowly down the section.
- Let the fabric cool completely before re-checking the fit.
Never set the iron above the polyester mark. Polyester begins to glaze, melt, or fuse to itself around 350°F, and once that happens the shirt is finished.
What Not to Do
Some online “hacks” do more harm than good. Skip these:
- Bleach soaking: doesn’t shrink poly, just damages dyes and fibers
- Vinegar washes: will not shrink synthetic fiber; it’s a softener
- Hair dryer on a single spot: uneven heat creates puckering
- Wash + dry on cool: defeats the entire mechanism — heat is the trigger
Expectations: How Much Shrinkage to Realistically Expect
Even with aggressive heat, plan on these realistic outcomes:
- 100% polyester: 3-5% shrinkage maximum, usually invisible to the naked eye unless the shirt was very loose
- Polyester-cotton blend (50/50): 5-8% shrinkage
- Polyester-cotton blend (35/65, cotton-heavy): 8-12% shrinkage, behaves more like cotton
- Performance polyester with elastane: shrinkage often partially reverses on next wear
If the shirt is two full sizes too large, no amount of heat will bring it down to a perfect fit. Tailoring is your better option — a basic body taper runs $20 to $35 at most cleaners.
Caring for the Shirt After Shrinking
Once you’ve achieved the size you want, lock it in by reverting to gentle care. Wash cool, hang dry or tumble dry low, and the new dimensions will hold. High-heat washes from that point forward may continue to shrink the shirt incrementally.
Iron only on the polyester setting going forward. Repeated high-heat exposure will eventually cause the fabric to pill and lose color depth.
When to Skip Shrinking and Just Tailor
If the shirt has structured shoulders, a complex pattern, or expensive printing, take it to a tailor instead. Heat shrinking is uneven by nature and can distort plackets, collar stands, and printed graphics. A $25 tailoring bill saves a $60 shirt.
