Polyester resists shrinking on purpose. The fibers are extruded as long, stable plastic strands, then heat-set during manufacturing so they hold their shape through hundreds of washes. Figuring out how to shrink polyester clothes means pushing the fabric past its original heat-setting temperature — carefully, because too much heat warps or melts it permanently.
This guide covers what works, what doesn’t, and how much shrinkage you can realistically expect from each method.
How Much Polyester Actually Shrinks
Set expectations before you start. Pure 100 percent polyester will shrink 1 to 3 percent under aggressive heat treatment. That works out to about a quarter to half an inch of length on a typical t-shirt. Polyester blends — usually polyester-cotton or polyester-spandex — shrink more, often 5 to 10 percent, because the cotton or spandex pulls down with the heat.
If your goal is to drop two sizes, polyester will disappoint. If you want to take a slightly loose shirt down half a size or tighten up a stretched-out garment, the methods below get you there.
Method 1: Hot Wash and Hot Dry Cycle
This is the easiest method and the one that gives the most consistent result. Read the care label first — some technical fabrics list a maximum wash temperature you should not exceed without risking permanent damage.
- Set the washer to its hottest cycle, typically 130-140°F
- Use a heavy-duty cycle and only wash the polyester items alone
- Add a normal amount of detergent — no special additives needed
- Move directly to the dryer on the highest heat setting (about 135°F)
- Dry for the full cycle, usually 50 to 60 minutes
- Check fit while warm — fibers shrink most while hot
Repeat the dry cycle once or twice if needed. Each cycle adds about 1 to 2 percent more shrinkage, up to the fabric’s limit.
Method 2: Boiling Water Soak
For stubborn pieces or when the dryer alone won’t do it, boiling water gets you a few extra percent.
- Fill a large stockpot with water and bring to a rolling boil
- Turn off the heat and let the water sit for 60 seconds to drop a few degrees below boiling
- Submerge the polyester garment using tongs or a wooden spoon
- Soak for 5 minutes, agitating gently
- Remove with tongs and transfer to the dryer on high heat
Wear oven mitts and work over a sink — splashes of near-boiling water cause serious burns. Skip this method for any garment with elastic, plastic prints, or sequins. Heat-pressed graphics start to soften at 250°F and can transfer onto themselves.
Method 3: Iron with Steam
An iron on its polyester setting (about 300°F) with steam can shrink targeted areas — useful when only the sleeves or hem are too long.
- Dampen the area you want to shrink with a spray bottle
- Place a clean cotton press cloth over the polyester to prevent scorching
- Iron on the polyester or low-medium synthetic setting
- Apply firm pressure with steam in 10-second bursts
- Move continuously — do not park the iron in one spot
Test on an inside seam first. Polyester turns shiny and stiff if heat sits on it too long, and the damage is irreversible.
Method 4: Hot Dryer Only
If the garment is already clean, you can skip the wash and shrink it in the dryer alone. Mist it lightly with water from a spray bottle until evenly damp, then dry on the highest heat setting for a full 60-minute cycle. The combination of moisture and heat replicates the wash-and-dry method without using water and detergent.
This works particularly well for polyester sweaters and hoodies, which tend to take wash-cycle shrinkage unevenly.
What Won’t Work and What to Avoid
Some popular internet suggestions do not move the needle on polyester:
- Cold water soaking — does nothing to polyester
- Vinegar or fabric softener — affects feel, not size
- Freezing — myth, polyester is dimensionally stable in cold
- Sun exposure — fades color, no shrinkage
Also avoid these dangerous mistakes:
- Direct flame or heat gun — melts the fabric in seconds
- Dry-cleaning solvent — has no shrinking effect
- Combining bleach with hot water — destroys fibers and color
- Heating any polyester garment with sequins, glitter, or plastisol prints above 250°F
Special Cases: Performance Wear and Blends
Athletic shirts and moisture-wicking polyester (Dri-FIT, ClimaLite, similar) are engineered to resist heat shrinkage and chemical treatment. You can shrink them slightly, but the wicking treatments often fail at high heat. A shirt that wicks perfectly today may wick poorly after two hot dryer cycles. Decide which matters more.
Polyester-spandex blends (common in leggings and activewear) shrink more than pure polyester because spandex shrinks at lower temperatures. Use medium heat instead of high to protect the spandex. Polyester-cotton blends behave more like cotton — expect 5 to 8 percent shrinkage with standard hot wash and dry.
Preserving the Result
Once you have shrunk a polyester garment to size, wash it on cold and tumble dry low or hang dry to prevent further shrinkage. Repeated high-heat cycles will continue to shrink and degrade the fibers, eventually causing stiffness, pilling, and loss of color.
For best results long-term, shrink the garment once aggressively, then move to gentle care. Polyester does not bounce back to its original size — the change is permanent. Whether that is good or bad depends entirely on whether you got the fit right on the first try.
