Learning how to use plastic drywall anchors properly takes about three minutes, but doing it the right way is the difference between a shelf that holds for 20 years and one that pulls out of the wall the week after you load it. The biggest mistakes are using the wrong drill bit, picking an anchor too small for the load, and not realizing that plastic anchors have a hard ceiling on weight no amount of installation skill can raise. Know What Plastic Anchors Can Actually Hold
The numbers stamped on the back of the package are not lies, but they assume ideal conditions and a static (non-vibrating, non-pulling) load. Realistic working capacity is roughly 50 percent of the package rating for safety.
- Small ribbed (size 6): 10 lb rated, 5 lb safe working load
- Medium ribbed (size 8): 25 lb rated, 12 lb safe working load
- Large ribbed (size 10): 50 lb rated, 25 lb safe working load

Match the Drill Bit to the Anchor
The most common DIY mistake is drilling a hole too big. An oversize hole eliminates the friction grip that holds the anchor in the drywall and the entire system fails on the first load. Each anchor size has a specific bit diameter, usually printed on the package.
Generic small ribbed anchors take a 3/16-inch bit. Medium ribbed take 1/4-inch. Large ribbed take 5/16-inch. Conical wedge anchors take 1/4-inch typically. If you cannot find the exact size, err on the smaller side. A snug anchor can be tapped in with a hammer. A loose anchor is useless.
The Step-by-Step Install
The process is straightforward once you have the right anchor and bit matched up.
First, mark the wall location with a pencil and use a level if you are installing more than one anchor for a shelf or picture pair. The Drywall Thickness Matters
Standard residential drywall is 1/2 inch thick. Ceiling drywall is 5/8 inch. Some older homes have 3/8-inch drywall, and bathrooms may have 1/2-inch cement board or moisture-resistant drywall. The anchor needs to be sized so the expanding portion sits behind the drywall, not inside the thickness.
