Vapor Barrier Behind Cement Board

A vapor barrier — typically 6-mil polyethylene sheeting (Visqueen) — is sometimes installed behind cement board as an additional moisture management layer. However, its role and necessity are widely misunderstood.

What a vapor barrier does: The plastic sheeting prevents moisture that passes through the cement board from reaching the wood studs and framing behind it. It does not make the shower waterproof — it is a secondary defense layer.

When it is appropriate: A vapor barrier behind cement board is part of the traditional shower construction method where cement board is the substrate and a topical waterproofing membrane (RedGard, Hydroban) is applied to the face of the cement board.
