Install 3-Way Switch: Wiring a Two-Location Light Circuit

Most kitchens, hallways, and stairways need a single light controlled from two spots, and that’s exactly what a three-way switch pair does. The wiring trips up DIYers because the switches don’t have an “on” or “off” position, and the terminal labels don’t always match what’s printed on the box. Once you see how the travelers move power between the two switches, the logic makes sense and you can install 3 way switch pairs in any room with confidence.

How Three-Way Switches Actually Work

A standard single-pole switch breaks one hot wire. A three-way switch has three brass screws plus one green ground screw, and it does something different. One terminal is the “common” (usually black or copper-colored), and the other two are “travelers.” Power enters the common of the first switch, leaves through one of two travelers, and enters the second switch on a matching traveler. The second switch’s common feeds the light fixture.

Flipping either switch swaps which traveler carries power. If both switches route power on the same circuit path, the light is on. If they don’t match, the light is off. That’s why neither switch has a labeled on/off position.

What You Need Before Starting

Pick up materials before opening a single box. A typical hallway run uses these items:

  • Two 15-amp three-way switches (Leviton or Lutron, $4 to $9 each)
  • 14/3 NM-B cable for the run between the two switches (15-amp circuit) or 12/3 for 20-amp
  • 14/2 NM-B for the feed and the fixture leg
  • Two old-work or new-construction switch boxes (20 cubic inches minimum)
  • Wire nuts in red and orange sizes
  • A non-contact voltage tester and a multimeter
  • A 6-in-1 screwdriver and Klein wire strippers

Confirm the breaker amperage at the panel before buying cable. A 15-amp breaker requires 14-gauge minimum, and a 20-amp breaker needs 12-gauge. Mixing gauges in a circuit is a code violation.

Cutting Power and Verifying It

Flip the breaker for the circuit you’re working on, then test at the existing fixture box or switch with a non-contact tester. Touch the tester to every wire including neutrals, because shared neutrals from other circuits can still be live. If the tester chirps anywhere, find the right breaker before going further.

Tag the breaker with a piece of painter’s tape and a marker so a housemate doesn’t reset it while you’re elbow-deep in the box.

Standard Wiring Configuration

The most common layout is “power in at the first switch, light leg from the second switch.” Here’s the wiring pattern:

  1. At switch 1, the incoming hot from the panel lands on the common terminal (the dark or labeled screw).
  2. Run 14/3 cable from switch 1 to switch 2. Connect black and red to the two traveler terminals at switch 1.
  3. At switch 2, connect the same black and red travelers to the two traveler screws.
  4. The white wire in the 14/3 between switches is used as a neutral pass-through (must be present for smart switches), spliced to the neutral bundle in each box.
  5. Run 14/2 from switch 2 to the light fixture. Connect the black to the common terminal at switch 2 and the white to the fixture neutral.
  6. Pigtail all bare ground wires to each switch’s green screw and the metal box if the box is metal.

Identify the common terminal by looking at the back of the switch. It’s usually black, sometimes labeled “COM,” and often on the opposite side from the matching pair of brass travelers.

Box Fill and Cable Clamping

Code requires every conductor entering a box to be counted toward fill capacity. A 14/3 cable counts as three conductors, a switch counts as two, and the ground wires together count as one. A 20.3 cubic inch plastic single-gang box typically handles one 14/3 plus one 14/2 plus a switch with no margin to spare. Use 22 cubic inch boxes if you have any doubt.

Cables need to be secured within 8 inches of a single-gang plastic box and within 12 inches of a metal box, using staples or strain-relief clamps. The cable jacket must extend at least 1/4 inch into the box.

Testing Before Closing the Boxes

With switches mounted but covers off, restore power at the breaker and test from each location. Flip switch 1 and confirm the light changes state. Flip switch 2 and confirm the same. Then test combinations: both up, both down, mixed. The light should respond to either switch regardless of the other’s position.

If the light only works from one switch, the travelers are reversed at one end. Kill the breaker and swap the two traveler wires at either switch (not at both).

Smart Three-Way Switches

Smart switches like the Lutron Caseta and Leviton Decora Smart need a neutral wire at one or both locations, and they often replace one switch with a “main” and the other with a “remote” or companion. Read the wiring diagram for your specific model before buying. The Caseta system uses a wireless companion that doesn’t even connect to the existing traveler wires, which makes retrofits in old houses easier.

Budget around $60 to $90 for a smart three-way pair. They pay back quickly in convenience for stairway and long hallway lights.

Inspection and Code Notes

The 2020 NEC requires a neutral in every switch box for new construction, even on simple switch loops. White wires used as hot conductors must be re-identified with black or red tape at both ends. Most local jurisdictions also require AFCI protection on bedroom and living-area lighting circuits, which is handled at the breaker.

If you pulled a permit, the inspector will want covers off so they can see the wire colors and grounds. Schedule the inspection before painting over the box edges.
