The Main Types of Cabinet Molding

Each molding profile solves a specific visual problem. Knowing the vocabulary makes ordering and installing far easier:

Crown Molding: The Big Statement

Crown is the molding people notice, and it comes in two mounting approaches. On cabinets that run all the way to the ceiling, crown ties them directly into the room’s architecture for a true built-in look. On cabinets with a gap above them, a “riser” or nailer strip is added on top first, then crown is applied to it, which creates a fuller cornice and hides the empty space.

Profiles range from a simple cove to elaborate stacked layers. In a kitchen with 8-foot ceilings, keep crown modest at 3 to 4 inches so it does not overwhelm the room. With 9- or 10-foot ceilings you can stack multiple profiles for a grander effect. Match the wood species and finish to your doors, or paint everything the same color for a seamless modern look.

Light Rail and Toe Kick

Light rail molding earns its keep the moment you install under-cabinet lighting. Without it, you see the LED strips and their harsh reflection on the countertop. The rail, usually three-quarters of an inch to an inch and a half deep, tucks the lighting out of sight and casts an even glow across the counter. Even without lights, it gives the bottom of the cabinets a finished edge.

Toe kick molding wraps the recessed base of the cabinets, hiding the unfinished panel and the gaps where separate cabinet boxes meet. Because it lives at floor level, it also takes the abuse of mops, shoes, and vacuum cleaners, so a durable finish here matters.

Materials and Matching

Molding comes in solid wood, MDF, and flexible polyurethane. Solid wood matches wood cabinets and takes stain, but costs more and can move with humidity. MDF is stable, paints flawlessly, and is the smart pick for painted cabinets. For staining, order molding in the same species as your doors, and if you bought your cabinets as a line, buy the matching molding from the same manufacturer so the color and grain line up.

Installing Cabinet Molding Cleanly

Crown molding is the trickiest cut in a kitchen because it sits at an angle, but the job is doable with a miter saw and patience. The single most important tip is to cut your inside and outside corners on scrap pieces first until the angles close tightly, since every crown cut is a compound angle.

  1. Measure each run and mark your cut lengths, accounting for the miter at each corner.
  2. Set the miter saw to 45 degrees for standard 90-degree corners, adjusting for out-of-square walls.
  3. Cut on scrap to confirm the corner closes before cutting your finish pieces.
  4. Attach a nailer strip to the cabinet tops if you are running crown to the ceiling.
  5. Fasten the molding with a brad nailer and 1.25-inch brads, gluing the mitered corners for a gap-free joint.
  6. Fill nail holes, caulk the top edge against the ceiling, and touch up the finish.

Caulk is the finishing secret that hides the small gaps between the molding and an uneven ceiling. A thin bead of paintable caulk, wiped smooth with a damp finger, makes even an amateur install look professional.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

The most frequent error is cutting corners flat instead of accounting for the crown’s spring angle, which leaves gaps that no amount of caulk can hide. Another is skipping the nailer strip and nailing crown directly to the thin cabinet top, where it can crack the panel or work loose. Finally, do not forget scribe molding on the ends of your run where cabinets meet a wavy wall; that thin filler is what makes the difference between a tight, custom look and a visible gap.
