Kraus Flooring: Pros, Cons, and Buying Guide

Walk into a regional flooring store east of the Mississippi and you will probably find at least three Kraus sample boards mounted on the wall. Kraus flooring has built a name across carpet, engineered hardwood, laminate, and LVP since their founding in 1959, and the brand sits in that quiet middle tier that contractors quote when they want quality without hitting Hallmark or Mirage prices. Understanding what Kraus does well — and where they cut corners — saves money on the bid.

Who Kraus Is

Kraus Group is a Canadian flooring manufacturer headquartered in Waterloo, Ontario. Founded as a carpet company by the Kraus brothers in 1959, the business expanded into hardwood, laminate, and LVP through the 2000s. They sell exclusively through independent flooring dealers — never big-box stores — which keeps margins reasonable for retailers and creates a more knowledgeable sales channel for buyers.

Their plants in Waterloo, Ontario and Calhoun, Georgia produce most of the carpet sold in North America, while hardwood and laminate are sourced globally with quality control overseen from headquarters.

The Main Product Categories

Kraus Carpet

This is the largest category. Kraus produces residential and commercial carpet across cut pile, loop, and pattern styles. The InCom commercial line is the most-specified for offices, multifamily corridors, and small retail. Residential pricing typically lands $2.49 to $5.99 per sq ft installed, including pad.

Kraus Engineered Hardwood

Kraus engineered hardwood comes from licensed Asian and European mills with a 2 mm to 4 mm wear layer over plywood or HDF cores. Pricing runs $4.99 to $8.49 per sq ft. The lower-tier products use thin wear layers that cannot be refinished — verify the wear layer in writing before assuming refinishability.

Kraus Laminate

Laminate ranges from 8 mm budget product at AC3 to 12 mm AC4 with EIR textures. Pricing $1.99 to $4.49 per sq ft. The premium 12 mm Kraus Architectural Series compares favorably with Pergo Outlast+ and Mohawk RevWood at slightly lower price points.

Kraus LVP

The newest category. SPC-core LVP from 4 mm to 6.5 mm with wear layers ranging 12 to 28 mil. Pricing $2.49 to $4.99 per sq ft. Kraus LVP is solid mid-tier product but does not stand out from competing brands at the same spec.

Where Kraus Flooring Excels

  • Carpet quality control: Decades of fiber expertise show in face weight consistency.
  • Dealer network: Trained showroom staff explain product better than chain stores.
  • Warranty support: Claims processed through dealers, fewer adversarial fights.
  • Color coordination: Hardwood and carpet color palettes designed to combine in mixed-floor homes.
  • Made in North America: Carpet specifically — not all categories.

Honest Drawbacks

The hardwood and LVP lines are sourced from offshore mills with periodic quality variability. Two pallets ordered six months apart can show subtle color and finish differences that an in-line homogeneous brand like Mirage or Kahrs would catch and reject. Verify lot numbers match across your delivery and order extra to account for any rejection.

Marketing names get reused across product categories, which creates confusion. “Kraus Eclipse” might refer to a carpet, a laminate, or an LVP depending on which catalog year. Always work from current SKU numbers, not collection names.

Warranty Terms by Category

Carpet warranties range from 5-year stain to 25-year wear depending on line. The Allergen Block treatment is a 10-year warranty on residential lines. Hardwood carries 25 to 50 year residential warranties on structure and 5-25 years on the finish. LVP wear-layer warranties run 15 to 25 years residential, 5-15 years light commercial.

The fine print matters. Kraus voids most warranties if the floor is installed by an uncertified DIYer over a substandard subfloor. Always document subfloor flatness with photos and request the dealer’s installer for warranty preservation.

Comparing Kraus to the Competition

Versus Mohawk SmartStrand carpet, Kraus delivers similar fiber technology at slightly lower price points but a smaller dealer network. Versus Mirage hardwood, Kraus engineered cannot match the milling tolerances or finish quality at any price point. Versus Pergo laminate, Kraus 12 mm AC4 holds its own and often beats Pergo on dealer pricing because Pergo carries a price floor at Lowe’s that dealers must match.

Versus LifeProof LVP, Kraus offers fewer SKUs but cleaner dealer support. The two brands occupy similar price-spec ranges; the deciding factor is usually whether you prefer big-box convenience or independent dealer service.

Installation Notes

Kraus carpet installs over a high-density rebond pad — 8 lb density minimum, 6 to 7/16 inch thick depending on the carpet style. Stretch tight using a power stretcher, not just a knee kicker, to prevent ripples within the first year.

Kraus engineered hardwood requires 7-day acclimation in the install room. Verify subfloor moisture content within 4% of the wood’s moisture content before nailing. Floating-installation Kraus laminate and LVP need 1/4 to 3/8 inch expansion gap at all walls, with the manufacturer-required underlayment specified by the SKU.

Best Lines to Consider

For carpet: Kraus Smart Step or Kraus InCom commercial loop hold up well in high-traffic homes with kids and pets. For laminate: Kraus Architectural Series 12 mm AC4 with the EIR finish — closest visual match to engineered wood at half the price. For LVP: Kraus Cliffside or Kraus Bold Solutions 6 mm SPC.

Final Verdict

Kraus flooring is the trustworthy mid-tier choice when you want better quality than big-box private label without paying premium-import prices. The carpet category is genuinely strong — carpet is what Kraus does best. Hardwood and LVP are competitive but not standout. If your local dealer carries Kraus and the pricing is competitive with comparable Mohawk or Shaw products, the choice often comes down to color preference and dealer support rather than measurable quality differences.
