Laminate Flooring Lifting at Edges: Pros, Cons, and Buying Guide

A laminate plank should sit flat and tight to its neighbors for the entire 20-year warranty. When the edges start curling up, the problem is almost never a defective plank. Laminate flooring lifting at edges is one of the most common installation failures and it almost always traces back to one of four root causes: moisture, missing expansion gap, subfloor imperfections, or wrong cleaning method. Diagnosing correctly determines whether the fix is a quick adjustment or a full tear-out and replacement.

The Four Root Causes Ranked

Moisture causes the majority of lifting problems. Water from spills, mopping, leaks, or vapor migration through the subfloor swells the HDF core at the edge, and the swollen edge cannot lay flat again even after drying. Missing expansion gap is the second most common cause. Laminate expands roughly 1/8″ per 10 feet across humidity swings, and when the planks hit a wall, cabinet, or vent with nowhere to expand, the field buckles upward at the weakest seam. Subfloor unevenness is third. Subfloor dips or peaks more than 3/16″ in 10 feet leave plank edges unsupported, which then crack and lift over time. Wet mopping is fourth, accelerating moisture damage along seams.

Identify the actual cause before you start prying boards loose. Otherwise the new floor will fail the same way.

How to Tell Which Problem You Have

Press down on the lifted edge. If it cracks, snaps, or shows damaged HDF, moisture has already destroyed the joint. If the edge springs back when released, the plank is intact but compressed. Walk along the perimeter and check expansion gaps. Pull the baseboard and look for 1/4″ minimum clearance between plank and wall. Run a 6-foot straightedge across the floor and look for daylight under it. Anything more than 3/16″ gap signals subfloor problems.

  • Damaged or swollen edges: moisture cause, replace planks
  • Tight expansion gaps with buckled field: trim gap, relax field
  • Subfloor dips: pull planks, level subfloor, relay
  • Whole room peaking in summer: humidity expansion, climate control issue

Fixing Moisture-Caused Edge Lifting

If the swelling is local, pull baseboards, unlock the click joints back to the damaged plank, and replace just that plank. Use a fresh board from the same dye lot if you saved overage, or order matching SKU from the manufacturer. If the moisture source is ongoing, like a dishwasher leak or a vapor barrier failure on concrete, fix the source first. Replacing the planks without addressing the source guarantees a repeat failure within months.

For widespread moisture damage covering multiple square feet, tear the entire room out, address the subfloor, and start over with new planks. Patching does not work at this scale.

Fixing Missing Expansion Gap

Pull every piece of baseboard and quarter-round around the room. Use an oscillating multi-tool to trim the plank ends back to a 1/4″ gap at every vertical surface, including kitchen islands, pipe collars, floor vents, and transition strips. Reinstall baseboards over the gap, not into the floor. If the field has buckled, give it 48 hours after creating the gap to relax before evaluating whether any planks need to be lifted and re-clicked.

Cabinet runs and tile transitions are the most commonly missed expansion locations. Check every one.

Fixing Subfloor Problems

This is the most expensive fix because it requires lifting the laminate entirely. Pull the planks carefully, store them face-up in stacks of 5, and inspect the subfloor with a 6-foot straightedge and feeler gauges. Sand down high spots on plywood. Fill low spots with a self-leveling compound like Mapei Novoplan 2 Plus or Ardex K 15 over a primer. Verify flatness to 3/16″ in 10 feet before relaying the floor.

If the original underlayment is crushed or damaged, replace it with new 2mm foam at the same time. Reused underlayment performs unreliably.

Prevention That Saves the Whole Floor

For new installs, acclimate boxes flat in the install room for 48 to 72 hours at 60 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit and 35 to 65 percent relative humidity. Verify subfloor flatness before laying the first plank. Use a manufacturer-approved vapor barrier over concrete subfloors. Leave a 1/4″ expansion gap at every vertical surface without exception. Use a tapping block, never a direct hammer on the plank edge.

For existing installs, run a humidifier in winter to keep indoor RH above 35 percent. Avoid wet mopping entirely. Address spills within minutes, not hours. Use entry mats and felt pads under furniture.

When Replacement Is the Only Real Option

Three signs indicate the floor is past patching. First, swelling visible along multiple seams across a room, not just one corner. Second, dark staining visible from above, meaning moisture has reached the printed decor layer. Third, soft or spongy feel when walking, which means the HDF core has saturated. In any of these cases, plan for full replacement. Patches will fail and you will replace the room twice.

Tear-out and replacement typically runs $4 to $7 per square foot in labor depending on regional rates, on top of the new material cost.

When to Choose Better Materials Next Time

If moisture caused your laminate failure, consider switching to SPC luxury vinyl plank for the replacement. SPC handles water far better than laminate while delivering similar visuals and price. Laminate flooring lifting at edges is a solvable problem, but if your home environment caused it once, the smart move is to change the material rather than rebuild the same vulnerability.

Tools Needed for the Repair

For a partial repair, you need a pry bar, hammer, oscillating multi-tool with a 1-1/8″ carbide blade, replacement planks from the original dye lot, and a tapping block with pull bar. A laminate spacer set helps reestablish expansion gaps cleanly. For subfloor leveling, plan on a 6-foot straightedge, self-leveling compound like Ardex K 15 or Mapei Novoplan 2 Plus, a paddle mixer, and a notched trowel. For full tear-out, a pry bar, claw hammer, and floor scraper handle most of the work. Budget half a day for a partial repair, two days for a full room.

Most repairs do not require specialty rentals. The exception is large self-leveling pours, which benefit from an aeration roller and a Gauge rake to maintain even thickness.

Cost of Repair Versus Full Replacement

Replacing a few damaged planks with saved overage costs roughly $50 to $150 in materials for a small room, plus 4 to 6 hours of DIY labor. Hiring a pro for partial repair runs $300 to $600 depending on regional labor rates. Full room tear-out and replacement at 200 square feet runs $1,200 to $2,400 in labor on top of new material at $1.50 to $4 per square foot. If laminate is failing in multiple rooms simultaneously, full tear-out across the affected zones with new SPC vinyl plank usually costs $4,000 to $8,000 for a typical first floor but ends the failure cycle permanently.

Compare the cost of repeated repair against the cost of upgrading the material once. In most cases the upgrade pays back within two repair cycles.
