Standing water in the yard is never just a cosmetic problem; it is a slow-motion threat to your foundation, your basement, and the health of everything you plant. Diagnose the Problem First

The single most important measurement is the slope near your foundation. The ground should drop at least 6 inches over the first 10 feet away from the house, roughly a 5 percent grade. If it is flat or sloping inward, no downstream fix will fully protect your foundation until you correct that.
Regrading and Surface Solutions
Often the cheapest fix is also the most effective: reshaping the soil so water naturally runs away from structures and toward a safe discharge point. Adding clean fill and tamping it into a gentle slope away from the foundation solves a surprising number of wet-basement complaints on its own.
A swale is a shallow, gently sloped channel, usually planted with grass, that carries surface water across the yard to a street, ditch, or rain garden. It looks like a natural dip rather than a trench, and it handles large volumes of sheet flow without any pipe at all.
French Drains for Subsurface Water
When water is saturating the soil rather than just running across the surface, a French drain is the go-to. It is a gravel-filled trench with a perforated pipe at the bottom, wrapped in landscape fabric, that collects groundwater and channels it away by gravity.
Build it right or it will silt up. Dig the trench about 18 inches deep with a consistent slope of at least 1 percent (1 inch of drop per 8 feet), line it with filter fabric, add a gravel base, lay the perforated pipe holes-down, then backfill with washed gravel. Expect material costs of $10 to $20 per linear foot for a DIY install, or $25 to $60 installed by a contractor.
Dry Wells and Catch Basins
Where water needs somewhere to go but the lot is flat with no slope to a street, a dry well gives it a destination. It is a buried perforated barrel or gravel pit, sized to your roof area, that holds runoff and lets it percolate slowly into the surrounding soil instead of pooling on the surface.
Pair a dry well with a catch basin, a grated box that captures water at a low point and feeds it underground through solid pipe. This combination handles downspout discharge well: route gutters into a catch basin, run solid pipe to a dry well 10 or more feet from the house, and the storm surge disappears underground.
Managing Downspouts and Gutters
Your roof sheds an astonishing amount of water; a 1,500-square-foot roof drops over 900 gallons in a single inch of rain. If your downspouts dump that volume right at the foundation, no yard drainage can keep up. Extend every downspout at least 4 to 6 feet from the house, or tie them into buried piping that daylights downslope.
Keep gutters clean so they actually carry water to the downspouts rather than overflowing along the wall. This is the cheapest, highest-impact step in the entire system and the first thing to check when a basement starts weeping.
Rain Gardens and Permeable Solutions
Not every fix has to be a buried pipe. A rain garden is a shallow planted depression positioned to catch runoff, filled with water-loving native plants whose deep roots drink up and filter the water. Sited at the end of a swale or below a downspout extension, it turns a drainage liability into an attractive, low-maintenance feature that also supports pollinators.
Permeable surfaces tackle the problem at the source. Permeable pavers, gravel beds, and porous concrete let rain soak straight through instead of sheeting off into low spots. Replacing a solid patio or section of driveway with a permeable version reduces the runoff your drainage system has to handle, and in some municipalities it can even lower stormwater fees.
Maintaining Your Drainage System
Even a perfectly designed system fails if it clogs, so build maintenance into the plan. Clean gutters and downspouts at least twice a year, more often under heavy tree cover, since a single blocked downspout can undo every other improvement. Flush catch basins and check that their grates are clear of leaves and debris before the rainy season.
French drains and dry wells need occasional attention too. The landscape fabric and gravel can slowly silt up over many years, gradually reducing flow, which is why proper filter fabric and washed gravel at install matter so much. Walk your yard during the next heavy rain after any work to confirm water is actually moving where you intended, and adjust before small issues become standing water again.
Putting a Drainage Plan Together
Real yards usually need a combination rather than one silver bullet. A typical plan might regrade the area near the foundation, route downspouts into a catch basin and dry well, and add a French drain along the chronically soggy side yard. Map the whole system to flow by gravity toward a single safe outlet.
If water is already entering the house or you are dealing with a steep, eroding slope, bring in a drainage contractor or civil engineer before spending on guesswork.
