Most subfloor failures are not the floor’s fault — they are a primer problem.   4. Priming over curing compound: Any silicate or wax curing compound on the slab must be ground off first. Latex will not penetrate it.

How to Test If It Worked

Two field tests confirm a good primer job. The first is the water-bead test: drop water on the cured primer and watch how it behaves. On a properly primed slab, the bead holds shape for 30 seconds, then slowly absorbs. If it soaks in immediately, the primer dried too thin. If it sits on top for 5 minutes, the primer is too thick and may need a light scuff before topping.

The second is the tape pull. Press a 6-inch length of duct tape onto the cured primer, then yank it off perpendicular to the floor. Clean tape means good bond. Tape with primer film stuck to it means the primer never bonded to the slab — usually a substrate prep failure, not the primer’s fault.
