The Polyurethane Deck Coating is the walkable one: a single-component, moisture-cured aliphatic/aromatic polyurethane that cures by reacting with humidity into an elastomeric membrane with several hundred percent elongation — rubbery enough to bridge hairline movement in plywood seams, tough enough for furniture and foot traffic. Moisture-cure means humidity is your co-worker: cure accelerates in humid warmth (50 to 90°F, no rain in the forecast for 24 hours) and crawls in dry cold. Practical timeline at 70°F and moderate humidity: touch-dry in 4 to 6 hours, light barefoot/sock traffic at 24 hours, normal foot traffic and furniture with pads at 48 to 72 hours, and full chemical cure — meaning planters, rugs, and dragged chairs — at 5 to 7 days. Rushing furniture onto a 24-hour-old membrane leaves permanent divots. In marginal shoulder-season weather, double every number.

How It Stacks Up Against the Alternatives

No rain for 24 hours after each coat is the hard rule; a shower at hour six leaves a moonscape you will sand off. Tooling is simple and disposable: a 3/8-inch nap solvent-resistant roller for fields, a 3-inch chip brush for edges and details, and a plastic spreader for pushing material into seam tape. Decant working quantities into a paint tray rather than working from the pail, and reseal the pail immediately — the product skins in the container from air humidity, and a 5-gallon pail left cracked open overnight can lose its top inch to cured skin. Honest Durability Expectations and the Verdict

Applied at full thickness over sound, well-detailed plywood, expect 5 to 10 years before a maintenance recoat — sun-baked south exposures at the short end, covered balconies at the long end. What it looks like as it ages: gradual chalking and color fade (aromatic urethanes yellow slightly, another reason grays and tans beat white), granule loss in traffic lanes, and eventually thin spots at edges and corners. None of that is failure; a cleaning and one refresher coat every 4 to 5 years ($60 to $150 in material) effectively resets the clock, which is the quiet advantage no sheet membrane offers. What actual failure looks like — blistering, fishmouths at seams, sheeting peel — traces back to damp wood, skipped seam tape, or thin film almost every time.

Verdict: a genuinely good product wearing a category’s worth of marketing promises. Budget 12 gallons where the label’s optimistic math says six, spend the first day entirely on prep and seam detail, hit 30 dry mils, and liquid rubber polyurethane deck coating delivers waterproofing that acrylic paints cannot touch at a third of sheet-membrane money. Skip any one of those four disciplines and you will be sanding off your investment in eighteen months.
