One of the most confused topics in vinyl flooring is whether you should put anything under the planks at all. LVT underlayment is sometimes essential, sometimes optional, and sometimes flat-out prohibited by the manufacturer’s warranty. The right answer depends entirely on how your luxury vinyl tile installs and what’s underneath it. Get this wrong and you can cause telegraphing, hollow sound, or a voided warranty. The One Rule That Settles Most Cases

Before anything else, read the installation guide for your specific product. Many rigid-core LVT and SPC planks ship with an attached pad already bonded to the back, and adding a second layer under them is not allowed. Glue-Down LVT: Usually No Underlayment

Moisture: The Reason Underlayment Matters Over Concrete

Concrete slabs, especially on grade or below grade, release water vapor for their entire life. This is where a moisture-management layer becomes important. Options include:

  • Underlayment with a built-in vapor barrier — a film layer that slows moisture reaching the planks.
  • A standalone 6-mil poly sheet — laid over concrete before a floating floor.
  • Manufacturer-specified moisture systems — required when slab readings exceed the flooring’s limit.

Test the slab first. A simple calcium chloride or relative-humidity test tells you whether vapor is a problem. Even waterproof LVT can trap moisture underneath and grow mold or lift if the slab is wet, so don’t skip this step because the vinyl itself is waterproof.
