Most homeowners assume any waterproof plywood will hold up under a wet bathroom or beach-house mudroom. That assumption ends in delamination within five years. Marine plywood flooring is bonded with Type-1 phenolic glue and uses near-void-free hardwood veneers, which is why boatbuilders trust it for hulls and decks that sit in saltwater. Used as a subfloor or underlayment in the right room, it adds decades of life to whatever finished surface sits on top.
What Marine Plywood Actually Is
True marine plywood follows BS 1088 or APA PS 1-09 specifications. Every veneer is a tropical hardwood like okoume, meranti, or sapele, and the layers are cross-banded and pressed with waterproof phenol-formaldehyde adhesive. Standard CDX plywood, by contrast, contains softwood plies, frequent knot holes, and core voids that wick water like a sponge.
Sheets typically come in 4 ft by 8 ft panels, with thicknesses ranging from 1/4 inch up to 1 inch. For residential subfloor use, 3/4-inch tongue-and-groove panels are the workhorse. Expect to pay between $90 and $180 per sheet at lumberyards that actually stock the certified product. If your local big-box store sells “marine grade plywood” at $55 a sheet, ask for the BS 1088 stamp before you load it.
Where It Belongs in a Home
Marine plywood is overkill for a typical bedroom subfloor. It earns its keep in spaces that see chronic humidity, splash zones, or occasional flooding. Think screened porches, boathouse interiors, beach-cottage bathrooms, sauna entries, and basements with a history of seepage. Pair it with a vapor barrier and the floor assembly handles 90 percent humidity without cupping.
One contractor I worked with in coastal North Carolina swears by it for laundry rooms. After a slow washing-machine leak warped 80 square feet of OSB on an earlier job, he swapped to 3/4-inch okoume marine ply with cap-sealed seams and never went back. Material cost ran roughly $1,800 for a 12 ft by 14 ft room versus $620 for OSB, but the homeowner avoided a $9,000 floor tear-out two years later.
Pros of Marine Plywood Flooring

- Long lifespan: Properly installed and sealed, marine ply outlasts the framing around it. Restoration crews routinely pull 40-year-old panels out of yacht hulls and reuse them.
- Smooth finish surface: The face veneers are sanded and free of knots, so you can stain and clear-coat panels for a finished floor in workshops, garages, or rustic cabins.
Cons You Should Plan For
Marine grade material is not magic. Several drawbacks deserve consideration before you bulk-order a pallet. Cost is the obvious one. A 12 by 16 foot room subfloored in 3/4-inch marine ply runs $2,400 to $4,300 in materials alone, two to three times the price of standard tongue-and-groove subfloor. Most homes never recoup that premium.
Then there is the formaldehyde question. While phenol-formaldehyde resins emit far less off-gas than urea-formaldehyde glues used in MDF, they still emit some. Look for CARB Phase 2 or TSCA Title VI compliant stamps if indoor air quality matters to you. Finally, marine plywood is not rot-proof by itself. The face veneers will still mildew if left damp without an applied finish or barrier. Seal all edges with epoxy or a quality oil-based primer before installation.
How to Buy the Right Sheet
Sourcing real marine plywood requires more than a Home Depot run. Specialty hardwood dealers, boatyards, and lumberyards that serve cabinet shops are your best bet. Ask three questions before you pay: Does it carry a BS 1088 or APA PS 1-09 stamp? What species is the face and core? What is the bond classification?
For a residential floor, look for these specs:
- BS 1088 certified or APA EXT-APA exterior bond grade
- Okoume or meranti core (avoid mixed-tropical or “MTC” panels for structural use)
- 3/4-inch thickness for joists 16 inches on center, 1-inch for joists 19.2 inches on center
- Tongue-and-groove edges if used as a finished subfloor under tile or LVP
Reputable brands include Joubert Marine, Bruynzeel Hechthout, and Aquatek. Avoid unbranded imports from generic online sellers. Counterfeit marine plywood is a known problem, and the failures are catastrophic and slow, so you may not notice until your tile cracks two years in.
Installation Tips From the Field
Treat marine plywood like a finish material, not just a subfloor. Acclimate sheets in the room for 72 hours before fastening, especially in humid climates. Use stainless-steel or hot-dipped galvanized fasteners, since electroplated screws will streak rust through any finish. Predrill near edges to prevent splitting the dense hardwood face.
Seal every cut edge with epoxy resin or a marine-grade penetrating sealer. Cut edges expose the end grain, which is the one path water can travel into the panel. Maintain a 1/8-inch expansion gap at walls and a 1/16-inch gap between sheets. Stagger panel joints by at least 4 feet across rows.
Is It Worth the Money?
For 90 percent of homeowners, the answer is no. A properly flashed standard subfloor plus a quality vapor barrier handles normal household conditions. Spend the money on marine plywood only when you are dealing with persistent moisture: a beach house six blocks from the ocean, a basement that has flooded twice, a steam-room antechamber, or a screened porch that will see horizontal rain every storm season. In those rooms, the upcharge buys you a floor that outlasts the house, and that is a deal worth taking.
