  • Visible growth at the registers, black, gray, or greenish specks around the vent covers, on the grille slats, or just inside the duct boot.
  • Growth on the evaporator coil or in the drain pan, the wettest, most common starting point, visible when you pull the access panel on the air handler.
  • Allergy-like symptoms that ease when you leave the house, congestion, sneezing, itchy eyes, or headaches that track with time spent indoors.

Not every dark smudge is mold, dust and soot look similar. The Health Risks

DIY Cleanup vs Calling a Pro

How much you can safely do yourself depends on the extent. Small, localized growth at a register or on a metal duct surface is within DIY reach. Turn off the system, wear an N95 respirator and gloves, and scrub the affected hard surface with a detergent solution or a product labeled for mold on HVAC surfaces, then dry it thoroughly. You can clean the evaporator coil with a no-rinse coil cleaner and flush the condensate drain line with a stiff wire and a wet-vac.

Bring in a professional when the growth is widespread, when it is inside insulated flex duct or fiberglass duct board, or when the affected area exceeds roughly 10 square feet. Porous fiberglass duct liner that has grown mold usually cannot be cleaned and must be replaced, not wiped. A qualified duct-cleaning or remediation contractor has negative-air equipment, agitation tools, and antimicrobial treatments rated for HVAC use, and they can address the source at the same time. What Not to Do

A few mistakes make things worse. Consider a media air cleaner or a properly rated filter to capture spores, and if the home has chronic humidity, address the root cause, a wet crawlspace, poor bathroom venting, an oversized AC, rather than chasing symptoms. The goal is not just to remove today’s mold but to make the ducts an environment where mold cannot restart, and that always comes back to controlling moisture and knowing, through measurement, that you have it under control.
