Bleach is not a mold killer on porous surfaces. That is the single piece of information most homeowners never hear before spraying a gallon of Clorox on drywall and wondering why the black streaks come back in three weeks. The right mold removal products depend entirely on the surface, the species of mold, and whether the underlying moisture problem is fixed. This guide covers what actually works on tile, grout, wood, drywall, and concrete, plus the gear that protects you while you clean.
Why Surface Type Matters
Mold on a non-porous surface (glass, tile, fiberglass, sealed stone) lives on top and wipes off with most cleaners. Mold on a porous surface (drywall, unsealed wood, grout, carpet) sends hyphae into the material. Surface cleaning only removes the visible layer. Without a penetrating product or full removal, the mold regrows.
Bleach is 96% water. The chlorine kills surface spores but does not penetrate porous materials. Worse, the moisture it leaves behind feeds any mold the chlorine missed.

Drywall is porous and painted surfaces add another layer of complexity. If the mold colony is smaller than a dinner plate and the drywall is still solid (no softness or swelling), a concentrated EPA-registered mold remediator like Mold Armor FG502 or Fiberlock ShockWave RTU will treat it.
Anything larger than 10 square feet on drywall should be cut out and replaced, per EPA guidance. Clean-up products cannot remove mold embedded behind paint and inside the gypsum core.

Safety Gear You Actually Need
Even small-area mold cleanup exposes you to spores that irritate lungs and can trigger immune responses. At minimum, wear:

These options are real but limited. They will not penetrate drywall, they will not stop a serious colony, and they are not a substitute for fixing the underlying moisture problem.
