That humming sound means the motor is getting power but the impeller is locked. My garbage disposal just hums is one of the most common kitchen complaints, and 90% of the time the fix takes 5 to 10 minutes with the small Allen wrench that came with your disposal. The remaining 10% of the time you have a burned-out motor, a broken capacitor, or a corroded grinding chamber — those are replacement situations rather than repairs. Why Disposals Hum Instead of Run
The motor itself is fine in most humming cases. When you flip the switch, electricity flows to the motor coils and they energize properly — that is the humming sound you hear. But the impeller plate at the bottom of the grinding chamber is jammed against either a foreign object, a wedged piece of food, or a corroded shaft. The motor cannot rotate the impeller against that resistance, so it just hums until the thermal overload trips and shuts everything off.
If you let the humming continue for more than 10 to 15 seconds, you can burn out the motor windings. Always shut off the switch immediately when you hear humming. The shorter your test runs, the better your chances of saving the unit.
Step One: Always Cut the Power First
Before reaching anywhere near the disposal, turn off the wall switch and unplug the unit if it has a cord. For hardwired disposals, flip the breaker labeled for the kitchen disposal — usually a 20-amp single-pole breaker. Verify the power is off by trying the switch and listening for any sound at all.
This step is non-negotiable. The grinding chamber contains exposed metal that becomes a shock hazard if water and a still-energized motor combine. Even after years of disposal work, electricians and plumbers always confirm dead power before touching the unit.
The Allen Wrench Method
Look at the bottom center of your disposal. You will see a hex socket about 1/4 inch wide. Most disposals come with a small Allen wrench — usually 1/4 inch — that fits this socket. If yours has been lost, a $5 hex key set from any hardware store includes the right size.
- Insert the Allen wrench fully into the hex socket on the disposal’s underside
- Turn the wrench clockwise and counterclockwise alternately, applying firm but not violent pressure

- Continue rotating the wrench through several full rotations in both directions to clear any remaining debris

Removing Foreign Objects from the Chamber
With the power off and confirmed off, shine a flashlight into the disposal opening and look for the obstruction. Common offenders include silverware that fell in unnoticed, bottle caps, twist ties, fruit pits like cherry or peach stones, and chicken or fish bones too large for the unit to grind.
Remove the object with long-handled needle-nose pliers — never your fingers, even with the power off. The grinding chamber walls have small flutes that can cut skin, and there is always a small risk of dropping tools that need to be retrieved later. Press the Reset Button
If the impeller turns freely with the Allen wrench but the disposal still hums when you turn the switch back on, check the reset button. Push the button firmly until you feel and hear a click. The button should sit flush with the bottom of the unit. If it pops back out within a few seconds of being reset, the motor is overheating internally — usually a sign of failing windings or a stuck capacitor.
The Ice and Salt Cleaning Method
Once the disposal is running again, run a maintenance cycle to clear out any remaining debris. Pour 2 cups of ice cubes into the chamber, add 1/2 cup of rock salt or coarse kosher salt, and run the disposal with cold water for 30 seconds.
The ice and salt scour the grinding chamber walls and the impeller faces, removing built-up grease, food residue, and small particles that accumulate over time. This cleaning method works on all disposal brands and is gentle enough to use monthly without damaging the unit.
When the Hum Means Replacement Time
Some hums are not solvable with simple fixes. If the impeller turns freely with the Allen wrench, the reset button stays in, and there are no visible obstructions, but the motor still hums when energized — the capacitor has failed. Capacitor replacement is technically possible on some models but requires opening the motor housing and matching exact part specifications.
