Orange Wire Nuts: A Complete Guide for Homeowners

Walk into any electrical aisle and you will see a rainbow of twist-on wire connectors stacked by the hundred. The colors are not decoration. Each shade signals a specific wire gauge and connection capacity, and getting the size right is the difference between a connection that lasts 50 years and one that loosens, arcs, and starts a fire. A typical ceiling light fixture comes with 18 AWG stranded wires that need to splice to the 14 AWG solid wire from the ceiling box. Yellow nuts are too large for that combo and the wires spin without making a tight bond. Orange nuts hit the sweet spot.

You will also see orange used in the splice between a single switch leg of 14 AWG and the small wires inside a smart switch or dimmer. Many smart switches like the Lutron Caseta and Leviton Decora Smart use 16 AWG pigtails that pair perfectly with orange connectors.

How to Make a Reliable Connection

A wire nut connection is only as good as the prep underneath it. Strip each conductor to about 1/2 inch for orange-size connections. Hold the stripped ends parallel and even at the tips. Then thread the wire nut on by hand and twist clockwise until the connector spins down tight and the wire jackets begin to twist below the nut.

When Orange Is the Wrong Choice

Three combinations make people wrongly reach for orange. First, splicing two 12 AWG copper wires. That is a yellow or red job. Force two 12s into an orange connector and the wires bottom out before the spring fully engages. Second, mixing aluminum and copper.
