Patios and walkways live and die by what is under the surface, not what is on top. Outdoor paver projects fail mostly because of inadequate base preparation, not because of the paver itself. Get the base right and a $4 per sq ft concrete paver will outlast a $20 per sq ft natural stone laid on bad gravel.
Paver Material Options
Concrete pavers dominate the residential market. They are manufactured by Belgard, Pavestone, Techo-Bloc, and Unilock, with compressive strengths of 8,000 to 12,000 psi. Base Preparation: Where Projects Live or Die
For a patio, the base needs to be 6 inches of compacted 3/4-inch crushed stone (called “crusher run” or “DGA”) topped with 1 inch of concrete sand. A 50-pound bag covers 75 to 100 sq ft of pavers and runs $30 to $45. Regular joint sand is cheaper at $8 per bag but allows weed and insect activity.
The application is critical. Sweep the polymeric sand dry into bone-dry joints, blow excess completely off the paver surface with a leaf blower, then mist with a fine spray nozzle. Any sand left on the paver surface during watering will haze the surface with a polymer residue that is hell to remove later.
