Rubber Tiles and Artificial Turf

Water pooling under any surface degrades it and breeds mold, so grade the base to shed water and lay crushed stone under loose fill. A solid border, whether timber, plastic, or rubber curbing, keeps loose materials at their rated depth where the protection lives. In freeze-thaw northern climates, loose fill and well-drained unitary surfaces handle the cycles better than anything that traps water, which cracks as it freezes.

Each spring, check loose fill for depth and top it off, rake it back into the high-wear zones under swings and slides, and look for any exposed hardware or roots.
