Bitumen-based mastics are the old-school choice still used on solid mosaic parquet. They’re cheap, around $0.50 per sq ft, and forgiving of slab imperfections, but they bleed through joints and stain end grain. PVA water-based adhesives are easy to clean up, low-VOC, and work well for engineered parquet on dry plywood subfloors. Polyurethane adhesives are the workhorse for solid parquet over concrete; they cure with moisture, bridge small cracks, and act as a vapor retarder. What Parquet Flooring Glue Costs
Bitumen mastic runs $30 to $50 per 5-gallon bucket, covering 150 to 200 sq ft. PVA wood glue formulated for parquet costs $40 to $70 per pail, covering 200 sq ft. Urethane adhesives like Bostik’s Best, Mapei P990, or Wakol PU 280 cost $90 to $150 per 4-gallon pail and cover 150 to 250 sq ft depending on trowel notch size. MS polymer products top out at $130 to $220 per pail with similar coverage. Material cost per square foot lands between $0.40 and $1.50 depending on chemistry and notch.
Buy a notched trowel matched to the manufacturer spec, usually a 4mm by 5mm V-notch for solid parquet or a 3mm by 3mm for thin engineered blocks. Wrong notch wastes 20% of the adhesive and thins the bond line.

Bitumen sticks to almost anything but stays soft enough to creep under heavy furniture decades later. PVA cleans up with water but loses bond strength under any moisture exposure, so it’s wrong for kitchens and basements. Urethane gives bulletproof bond strength and acts as its own vapor barrier, but it cures fast (45 to 60 minutes), stains skin and fabric on contact, and needs mineral spirits for cleanup. Plywood and OSB subfloors accept any of the four chemistries, but PVA or MS polymer are easier to work with for smaller residential jobs. Never glue parquet directly to vinyl, ceramic tile, or old adhesive residue. The bond is only as strong as the substrate underneath, and old adhesives release under load even if they feel solid.
Application Techniques That Actually Matter
Spread no more glue than you can cover within the open time printed on the bucket; for urethane that’s 45 to 90 minutes. Hold the trowel at a consistent 60-degree angle, dragging in straight lines, never swirling. Tap each parquet block down with a rubber mallet immediately after placing it; the goal is full coverage on the back of the block, not just a few high ridges of glue making contact. Lift the first block after laying to verify 90% transfer; adjust your trowel angle or notch size if you see voids.
Roll the floor with a 75 lb to 100 lb roller within an hour of laying to seat the blocks. Renting a roller for $25 to $40 a day is the difference between a tight, hollow-free floor and one that creaks for 20 years.
Working Time and Cure Schedule
Open time (how long the glue stays workable in the bucket) and working time (how long the glue stays sticky on the subfloor) vary widely. Bitumen and PVA give you hours; urethane gives you minutes. Plan your spread pattern accordingly; for urethane, work in 30 to 50 sq ft sections with the bucket nearby. Foot traffic typically can resume in 12 to 24 hours, but heavy furniture should wait 48 to 72 hours, and refinishing or sanding waits a full week.
Humidity and temperature shift these numbers significantly. At 85°F and 70% humidity, urethane cures 30% faster than at 65°F and 30% humidity. Cool, dry conditions are easier on you but extend the timeline.
Common Mistakes That Wreck a Parquet Floor
The top three mistakes I see on inspections are: using PVA on concrete, skipping the moisture test, and trying to lay parquet on a subfloor that exceeds 3/16 inch deflection over 10 feet. Any one of these guarantees problems within five years. The fix is always the same: grind, level, moisture test, and re-glue with the right chemistry. Doing it right the first time costs $1 to $2 per sq ft more than the cheap path. Doing it twice costs everything.
Buying the Right Parquet Flooring Glue
Read the manufacturer-recommended adhesive list before buying any parquet product. Many warranties are voided if you use an off-list adhesive, even if the chemistry is identical. Bostik, Mapei, Sika, Wakol, and Stauf are the five brands you’ll see most often on pro spec sheets. For a typical 400 sq ft engineered parquet job over plywood, expect to need three to four pails. For solid parquet over concrete, four to five pails of urethane plus a fresh pair of nitrile gloves per bucket. Buy from a flooring distributor rather than a hardware store; the freshness date matters, and pro suppliers turn inventory faster.
