Most homeowners can name the brand of their refrigerator but cannot find their main water shutoff valve. That is a problem, because the plumbing main line is the single most consequential pipe in the house. When it fails, you do not get a dripping faucet; you get a $400 water bill, a flooded crawl space, or a sewer backup that displaces your family for a week. Understanding what it is, where it runs, and what tends to break gives you a fighting chance to avoid the worst-case repair scenarios.
Two Main Lines, Not One
Every house has two main lines: a water supply line that brings fresh water in from the utility, and a sewer or drain main line that carries waste out. The supply line is pressurized at 40 to 80 psi, runs from the city water meter to the house, and is usually 3/4 in or 1 in copper, polyethylene (PE), or PEX. The sewer main line is gravity-fed, larger at 4 in, and made of cast iron, clay, ABS, or PVC depending on the era of the house. Both can fail, and the symptoms and repair costs are completely different.
Finding Your Shutoff Valves
The supply shutoff is the first valve you can reach after the water meter. In warm climates it is outside near the meter box; in cold climates it is inside, typically near where the line enters the house through the foundation, basement, or crawl space. There may also be a curb stop valve at the property line that requires a long T-handle key to operate. Find both before the day you need them. Test the inside valve once a year by closing it fully and reopening; a stuck valve discovered during a burst pipe is a brutal lesson.
The sewer cleanout is the white or black capped pipe sticking 6 in out of the ground near the foundation. That is where a plumber will run a snake or camera when the main line backs up.
Common Supply Line Pipe Materials
Houses built before 1960 often have galvanized steel main supply lines that corrode internally and restrict flow over time. A 1 in galvanized line can have a 1/4 in effective inside diameter after 50 years. Mid-century homes commonly used copper, which lasts 50 to 70 years before pinhole leaks start. Houses from the 1970s and 1980s sometimes used polybutylene, which fails catastrophically and is a known insurance issue. Modern installations use Type L copper, PEX-A, or HDPE (high-density polyethylene) for the buried run from the meter.
If you have polybutylene, plan on replacement. Your insurance carrier will likely raise rates or refuse coverage on a known failed material.
Sewer Main Line Materials and Failure Modes
Cast iron sewer mains, common in houses built before 1980, last 60 to 100 years but corrode from the inside and develop rough internal walls that catch debris. Clay tile sewer mains used in older properties are vulnerable to root intrusion through joints. ABS and PVC, used since the 1970s, are largely failure-free except for ground settling that cracks fittings. The most common sewer main failures are root intrusion, joint separation from soil shift, and grease accumulation that hardens into a wall-coating layer.
Signs of Trouble Before a Burst
Watch your water bill. A 20 percent jump with no change in usage usually means a leak somewhere between the meter and a fixture. Damp spots in the yard along the line of the main, especially during a dry week, indicate a buried supply leak. For sewer lines, multiple slow drains across the house (not just one fixture) point to a partial main line blockage. Gurgling from drains when a toilet flushes is another sewer warning sign.
A plumber with a camera scope can inspect a sewer main for about $200 to $400 and tell you exactly what condition the line is in. Many recommend this inspection before buying any house built before 1990.
Repair and Replacement Costs
Replacing a buried water supply line from the meter to the house runs $2,500 to $8,000 depending on length, depth, and whether the trench has to cross driveways or landscaping. Trenchless pipe bursting can sometimes pull a new HDPE line through the old one for $4,000 to $7,000 with minimal yard damage. Sewer main replacement is more expensive at $4,000 to $15,000 because the lines are deeper, larger, and require permits and city inspection. Spot repairs to a single failed section run $1,500 to $3,500.
Permits, Codes, and Pros
Both supply and sewer main repairs require permits in every US jurisdiction and must be done by a licensed plumber under the International Plumbing Code (IPC) or Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) depending on the state. DIY work on the main line is not legal in most municipalities and will void homeowners insurance coverage for any subsequent water damage. Get at least three quotes for any main line work and ask each contractor for proof of license, bond, and insurance before signing anything.
Preventive Habits That Save Real Money
Run a monthly check of your water meter with no water flowing in the house. If the dial moves, you have a leak. Avoid pouring grease, wipes, or paper towels down any drain to protect the sewer main from blockages. Have a plumber camera the sewer line every five to ten years on older houses and treat tree roots with copper sulfate or a foaming herbicide once a year if your sewer line runs near mature trees.
