Walk into any hardware store’s plumbing aisle and you will face a wall of pipe in copper, white plastic, gray plastic, and flexible red and blue tubing. PEX: The Modern Standard for Supply Lines

Cross-linked polyethylene, known as PEX, has taken over residential water supply plumbing for good reasons. It resists freezing better than copper or CPVC because it expands slightly instead of bursting. And at roughly $0.40 to $2 per linear foot, it is cheaper to buy and dramatically faster to install.

PEX comes color-coded, red for hot and blue for cold, though the color is just a convenience and any PEX carries either.
