Hissing radiators and cold rooms in a steam-heated home almost always trace to a single $25 part — and most homeowners spend $300 on service calls before they figure that out. Radiator steam valve components do two jobs: regulate the supply of steam from the boiler and let trapped air escape so steam can fill the radiator. When either function fails, the radiator stops heating, water hammer starts banging through the pipes, or steam vents into the room and ruins the wallpaper. Sizing the Air Vent

Supply Valve Failures
The hand-wheel supply valve uses graphite or rubber packing around the stem to seal the spindle. After 50 to 80 years, packing dries out and steam leaks at the stem. Symptoms include rust streaks down the valve body and a small but constant hiss. Tightening the packing nut a quarter turn often stops a minor leak. Replacing the entire valve requires draining the line, breaking the union nut on the supply pipe, and threading in a new valve with pipe dope or Teflon tape rated for steam (yellow gas-line tape, not white plumbing tape).
Replacing an Air Vent: Step by Step
- Wait for the radiator to cool completely — 2 to 3 hours after the last burner cycle.
- Place a rag and a small bowl under the vent to catch any drips.
- Hold the radiator end with one hand to brace, then unscrew the old vent counterclockwise with channel locks or an open-end wrench.
- Wipe the threads clean with a rag.
- Apply two wraps of yellow Teflon tape clockwise on the new vent’s threads.
- Hand-thread the new vent in, then snug with a wrench — about a quarter turn past hand-tight.
- Run the burner for one cycle and listen for hissing or leaks.

Diagnosing Common Problems
Cold radiator, no air escaping the vent: vent stuck closed, replace it. Cold radiator, water dripping from vent: vent flooded with condensate because radiator is pitched wrong — shim the back legs to tilt the radiator slightly toward the supply valve. Banging pipes (water hammer): condensate trapped in supply line, often due to partially closed supply valves or pitched-wrong piping. Whistling or screaming vent: rare but indicates a stuck vent under high pressure — turn off the boiler and replace immediately.
Operating Pressure Matters
Steam systems are designed for low pressure — most residential systems target 1 to 2 PSI. Higher pressures damage vents and force water through traps. Check your pressuretrol on the boiler. The cut-in setting should be 0.5 PSI; cut-out at 1.5 PSI; differential at 1 PSI. Cranking pressure higher does not heat faster, it just wastes fuel and breaks vents.

If your boiler is more than 25 years old, leaks at any seam, or shows scale buildup in the gauge glass, get a steam-specialist heating contractor — not a forced-air or hot-water tech.
